Removable shoes, new patterns

Regular sized to fit any of the 9 inch tall animals

(rabbits, bears, mice, foxes, monkeys, pigs, cats, elephants, sheep, deer and lions)

Small sized, to fit the 7 inch rabbits pattern

When my daughter was little she was quite good a loosing little bits of toys (sorry to tell tales on you Amy), and I spent lots of time hunting for lost things under sofas, down the back of seat cushions and poking through the contents of the vacuum cleaner cylinder. So when I designed the little cotton rabbits I chose to knit the shoes as part of the feet and so avoid having to spend time hunting down or re-knitting lost shoes. It’s become apparent though that some people who knit my animal patterns would like to have shoes that do come off and so can be changed to match an outfit, so over the last few months I’ve been working on these patterns for removable shoes.

There’s a pattern to fit the regular (9 inch sized animals) and one for the smaller 7 inch rabbits (please check you have the right one in your basket before you check out).

Both patterns contain 5 pairs of shoes: 3 pairs of Mary-Jane style with a functional buttoning strap; a pair of laced up trainers and a mules- style slipper. There are also options for knitting feet and legs with knitted on socks, either with a simple garter stitch cuff or a folded over ribbed cuff.

I’ve designed the shoes and trainers to be close fitting and to be shaped around the foot with some short-rows and decreases and the slippers, whilst easy to take on and off are held in place on the foot by a knitted on trim. Hopefully they’ll fit your animals foot well and you’ll not need to be knitting replacements for any lost shoes anytime soon 🙂

You can find the patterns in the usual places, either on Ravelry or on Etsy

If you give either pattern a go please come and share your projects over on Ravelry or on the facebook group, it gives me so much pleasure to see what you make from my patterns.

Happy knitting, J xx

  1. Thank you Julie for the beautiful little shoes patterns, I have just got both🤗. May I ask you one question, the 9inch animals that have shoes as part of the pattern, what would you suggest in knitting their feet, so I can use the removable shoe pattern?

  2. Hi Gail and thanks so much. If you take a look in the new shoes pattern there are 4 pages at the back which have 3 options for the legs and feet – one with bare feet (a slightly smaller and more delicate foot than included in the boy animal patterns) or two socked foot options, eith with a simple garter stitch cuff or a folded over cuff. So you can pick any of those options and knit those instead of the regular legs with knitted on shoes that are in the girl animal patterns. Hope this helps, J x

  3. Would the removable shoe patterns work (fit) on previously knit bunnies (both 9” and 7”)?
I’ve made both sizes. After making several large boy bunnies, I made a small bunny and loved the small size for small hands. I appreciate your explicit & easy to understand instructions. Thank you.

  4. Oh how lovely and fun! For some reason I don’t much enjoy knitting the shoes on and like to make the boy feet but they always seem so big to me. Now my little girls can go barefoot or have dainty little shoes to match their outfits. ❤️ Off to Ravelry to do a little shoe shopping!

  5. Hi Julie. I am so happy to have found your blog. I started this weekend and have just finished reading (and loving) every single post since you started in 2006! It has been such a pleasure. You write beautifully, you photos are amazing, your knitting and crochet is awe-inspiring and I love to hear about all of the goings on in your life. I look forward to your future posts. Hugs in this difficult time. No need to reply (NNTR)

  8. i have not tried your patterns, but i enjoy reading your blog, especially the daily life with family members. it helps me so much to try to maintain the calm presence with adult children, one with a mental illness and one who “just missed” a diagnosis on the Asperger’s spectrum. yep, in the US that matters. but the adventure is the same wherever you are. thank you for your calm and strength. i really enjoy hearing about both children. it’s easy to skim over the life of one over the other depending on which one is “succeeding” and you present a good balance.
