routines

Monday morning. It’s nicely quiet and calm here and I’ve just finished my favourite breakfast of poached egg (thankyou Mrs chickens) on hot buttered toast with a pot of tea – a good start to any day. I had planned to be back here on the blog sooner but it has taken a little longer than expected to get Toby settled back at school and Amy moved into her new uni digs. At last though we are back into familiar routines – to some that might sound boringly monotonous but here routines are a welcomed necessity and help our little family function.

Toby is now in the sixth form at school and so doesn’t wear uniform. As someone who takes great comfort in the visual clues that different outfits bring to his life, he has had a little difficulty adjusting but we’ve settled on familiar school shoes and black jogging bottoms paired with a colourful T shirt (previously strictly weekend wear) and a new grey hoodie, and he’s now adapting. Amy has had some challenges with settling into her new digs after a summer of living at hotel mum & dad but is now (I think and hope) happy to be back at uni and ready for year 2.

Now that I have time to myself again I’ve been tidying the house and sorting out paperwork relating to Toby’s transition from child to adult social services – lots of reading and research to do and a lot of planning too. Once I’m on top of the paperwork and have caught up with emails I’ll be joyfully turning my full day-time attention back to knitting and pattern writing – I can’t wait! I have so many ideas bouncing around my head and hastily scribbled in notebooks over the last 3 months and I’m looking forward to sharing them with you. A sneak peek of one of the free patterns I’m planning on sharing is above.

I’ll be back soon with more knitting news, ’til then thanks for dropping in to visit with me,

J x

  1. Hi Julie, nice to have you back again! Beautiful pictures! Looking forward to your patterns, but do take your time. Here too we have had some struggle finding back our routines. Once they are there again, life is much easier!

  2. I’m a lover of those routine days as well. Your breakfast looks utterly delicious, always my favourite meal of the day. I’m glad you and Toby have found a ‘uniform’ that he is happy with now, I know how hard change can be for him. Glad that Amy is happy to be back at uni – those are amazing photos, and what a stunning building. Good luck with all that paperwork, I hope you get through it soon. CJ xx

  5. It has been a long time since I used to follow your blog and you may not remember me. I too have an autistic son. We have just been dealing with the nightmare of the change over from DLA to PIP. To think they can possibly stop something as crucial as this to someone with a lifelong disability is just criminal really. We were initially told it was ‘for life’ and now that is all changing. There have been some real nightmare stories out there as well about how people have been denied it. So very concerned.
I hope the transition from child to adult social services goes well for Toby. All the best. We know what that paperwork is like!
Take Care and don’t forget to enjoy the amazing weather we have here at the moment here in Hertfordshire

  6. Wow!! I was so amazed to see your photos… that building… I went there!! Well… a long time ago now (91-94!), and I know it’s all changed. My hall of residence was like a prison – our rooms had unpainted breeze blocks and just a sink, we had shared toilets and the shower for the whole corridor was a bit like the one in ‘Psycho’!… maybe that will help Amy to feel better about her digs?! Wonder if the canteen is still called Boog?! My best friend there came from Switzerland, and chose the university based purely on that amazing building! Happy memories 🙂 Hope she enjoys her year.
