Hello again. It's nice to be back now that the children are at school again. It's been longer than I planned since I popped in here and I had intended to write another couple of blog posts over the school summer hols but circumstances conspired to keep me away from the computer. I will write up a post soon about my summer knitting exploits but today is a special day as it is my blog anniversary – it was exactly seven years ago today that I first dipped my toe into bloggy waters.

Candycoco

At the time I didn't have any long term plans for the blog. All I wanted was a distraction from worrying about Toby (who was having his very first day of school), a way of connecting with other people who like to make things (because it appears that none of them live very near me) and maybe a way of selling a few knitted things so that I had an excuse to keep making them. I count myself extremely lucky to have had all 3 of those wishes come true and so much more besides. I've made real life friends through this little blog, built a small business which does indeed allow me to justify buying lots of yarn and knitting each and every day and I have a lovely place to come to escape from some of the worries about Toby's future.

But all this would not have been possible without you – all you lovely visitors who pop in and say Hi, offer encouragement, support and generally just make me feel happy and part of a like-minded community.

As a small thank you I am giving away the two bunnies above (called Candy and Coco). To be in with a chance of winning one of them just leave me a comment below and tell me something you like to do with your free-time. I'll pick 2 winners using a random number generator a week today (Tuesday 10th September)

I'm also giving away a free supplement to my bunny girl/seasonal dresses knitting patterns. This is for the dress design on the bunnies above and includes charted and written instructions (please note that you will need one of my patterns as the supplement is just the design notes rather than the full instructions for the dress construction). If you'd like a copy you can download it for free here.

Thanks again for continuing to visit with me and for all of your lovely comments over the last 7 years, I hope you'll stick around for a while longer x

………………………………………………………..

As always after the long summer holidays I am woefully behind with replying to emails. I hope to catch up over the next week, sorry if you are waiting to hear back from me.

  1. Thank you for this chance Julie, as always your bunnies are so bonnie. I spend my spare time crafting – from cross stitch to knitting to learning to crochet – there is so much to choose from.

  2. How lovely to hear from you again! I check in regularly and think you are soooo talented, so thank you for sharing your skills and life with us. In my free time I choose to knit small projects which I usually give away as gifts, and I love to bake cakes. I suspect lots of people will say they choose to knit. My other favourite thing is just looking through my patterns or going on Ravelry for ooh, several hours at a time. Lovely to have you back xx

In my spare time I read crafty blogs and look at patterns on ravelry. And, of course I knit! Mostly I knit in the car or in front of a film/television program (no, I’m not the coolest 15 year old but who cares?) 🙂

Me I love to do all kinds of crafts in my spare time, but ever since you released your bunny pattern it seems to be all I do lately! 😀 I know I’m not alone with this obsession…
Other than that I like to nordic walk and spoil my family and pets. Thank you for including me into the random draw, maybe I’m lucky, so I can own an original Julie bunny too! 😉

  16. I love your blog and your Rabbits Julie. In my ‘spare’ time (I make time if I need to), because let’s face it, the housework will wait! I love to sew, knit, patchwork, most crafts really except papercrafts. I have four children, so am always making them a new quilt or a special bag or a softie that they have eyed off. Next on my list is one of your rabbits, I’m sure I won’t be making just one…

  18. Hello chica, lovely to see you back after the mayhem that is the Summer holidays. This morning there was a light mist on the hill and a definite tang of the season of mellow fruitfulness in the air. My boy joined his sister at secondary school today so this positive but secretly quite nervous mama went blackberry picking with a friend she hasn’t seen all holidays.
As we both know blogging and the community we have discovered within it is the best thing ever.

  20. Nice to see you back, Julie. Because I suffer from severe bi-polar disorder, ‘free time’ really means time when I can do ‘normal’ things like make a meal or empty the dishwasher. Knitting, though, I can do most of the time, even when my symptoms are really bad. I only knit toys as anything bigger requires too much concentration.

My husband had to work the first Christmas we were married, so I stayed home and taught myself how to knit. Besides knitting, I’ve also learned how to sew and am learning more about cooking and baking. And I’ve always adored reading. If I’m not at work you can generally find me doing one of those things!

I had only recently downloaded several of your patterns, as I have three little grand daughters who adore all things “bunny,” especially when you can dress them up! I counsel women who are victims of sexual abuse & domestic violence, really dark & painful things, so at the end of the day I find it therapeutic for me to gather up beautiful yarns and knit, knowing that lovely things will emerge from the needles and happy faces will result when the treasures find their way to someone dear.

My grandchildren also keep me very busy with two more due in November – how did I ever have time to teach full time!

Bunnies are always lovely, I used to have several IRL but not anymore cause I have a husband who doesn’t want to live at an animalfarm if I get it me way hahahah Due to having my own candyshop and therefor working 6 days a week, my sparetime is rare. But as soon as I get home I put on the easy clothes, take the dogs to the woods nearby and then sit with them doing some crocheting. ( just for the record, the dogs are not alone all day, my son is at home evry afternoon to keep them company) crocheting relaxes me and having the doggies around is all I need 🙂

  100. Hi Julie. Congrats on 7 years of blogging – that is seriously impressive! The bunnies are utterly delightful and it’s very generous of you to be willing to part with them :). If they were to come and live in my home, they’d probably land up on my little girls’ beds, as much as I’d insist they’d be on mine!
In my spare time (which is sadly not as much as I’d like), I work on one my numerous crochet projects, design cards, play SkyWords, browse Pinterest and crafty blogs, and (when I feel energetic) go for little bicycle rides in the neighbourhood with my children.

  111. Hi
I have only just discovered you but we are very similar spirits. I am a mother of two autistic learning disabled boys. I found crochet at the point when my husband left us and it saved my life. I crochet gifts that I give away to friends, volunteers and carers who help me with the boys. Crochet, yarn and my new passion of spinning helps me to breathe and cope with the constant aggressive challenges and huddles that the boys throw at me daily. Your blogs are in spiritual and I feel very much in tune with your thinking and positive view on life .

I work part time as a graphic designer for a library and while it is a very nice job, it’s hard to work without other creative people. We have a knitting group at the library and the ladies have helped me a lot, but in the summer it’s harder to find time. My problem is that I can’t seem to concentrate on one craft, too many projects are are on my to do list (including a bunny pattern!) I admire you for finding something you love, excelling at it and creating such lovely art. Have a wonderful day.

Spare time – technically as I work part-time my hubby says I must have plenty (hah!) but I do find the time to potter about sewing, knitting, crocheting, making jewellery and wood-working (not all at once, and not generally even all in the same month, but I like to keep my crafting on a broad scale!).
Your blog and your lovely patterns are inspirational, and if our comments can return the favour by helping keep you going, so much the better.

  171. Hi Julie! Your blog has always been inspiring, both in terns of creativity and life in general. I’ve been a crafter since the age of 7, when a maiden aunt introduced me to the art of counted cross stitch! Since then, more years have gone by than I like to count (being now 40 something!) and I’ve loved extending my repertoire to making hand sewn patchwork quilts, rag / character dolls of many varieties, costumes for children’s plays / school productions and generally any situation that can include something hand sewn. My new love (discovered around 12 months ago) is making Waldorf dolls – a welcome distraction my health issues and an opportunity to learn the skill of crochet. I’ve always been a much better and keener sewer than knitter, so have long admired (and envied!) your gorgeous little rabbits – to own one would be a dream come true, so thanks for the opportunity. And of course, it goes without saying, here’s to your next seven years of blogging…and another seven after that!

Now what do I like to do in my free time?? Hmmm since setting up my little handmade homemade business I now do my hobby (sewing) for work so I recently taught myself crochet which I just love. I’ve also started taking all my recipes off my book shelf and picking out recipes to actually make from them as opposed to just looking at the pictures longingly :O) Reading is also something I’ve got back into. For a long time I never seemed to have time to read but now I’ve started to go to bed an hour earlier than normally and indulging in lovely books – most recently Meet me at The Cupcake Cafe (very apt considering the bunnie’s have cupcakes on their dresses).
Last but by no means least – reading yours and all the lovely blogs out there. Oh and instagram!

Hmmm, free time. What’s that??? 😀
For free time lately I have been reading like mad. Seriously. Reading books so fast I can’t tell you what the last book I’ve read. I feel like I am starving and just keep reading and reading and obviously not digesting what I’m reading much!! There are worse things I suppose……….
Levi has a new teacher this year and has taken some time settling in. Thank fully he is doing so. I think………. it’s hit or miss. 😀 He went on a camping trip with his daddy this past weekend and had fits the entire time from all of the bugs. 🙂 Good times!!!
Glad you are back!! I’ve missed you. When I saw you’d posted I squealed and came straight to your blog.
Have a great and wonderful week.

In my free time I enjoy reading, crafty and home decor blogs, crocheting, and quilting. I’m getting into baking but it’s rather dangerous for my sugar intake. CUPCAKES!!!

It is nice to hear that blogging brought you the things that you hoped it would. It is a great way connect with other people across the world with similar interests. My blog is mostly about the things I make in my free time. I like to quilt, knit, crochet, sew, cross stitch and I am learning to weave. I also like non-crafty things like reading, baking, listening to podcasts, bike riding, hiking, and spending time with my friends. I am lucky that nearly all of my friends are crafters so most of our get-togethers involve some sort of making.
    Happy knitting!

  425. Firstly, thank you for sharing yourself with us in this delightful blog. I came across it when I was looking for online patterns of bunny rabbits to knit. (Being chronically ill, I thought some small knitting projects would distract me from myself!) I was besotted not only by your adorable bunnies, but by the beauty you see, create and share. I am amazed at the quality of your work, your attention to detail and the way you faultlessly combine colours and designs. You inspired me to start creating! So thank you…I began with rabbits, but have moved on to crochet at the moment and think how lucky I am to live at a time when a computer can open up the world to me, even though I am almost always housebound. That’s how I could learn to crochet. I used to do more gardening and sewing and some knitting, but crochet is my present joy…I’m sure one of your bunnies would enjoy living in the country with me, we’d keep each other good company.

Since retiring I have taught myself to crochet and enjoy that very much although arthritis in my hands and shoulders stops me frm doing as much as I would like.and I now follow lots of blogs and play around on the net on my iPad. Four months ago I broke my right arm near my shoulder and it’s been a long road back with more months rehab to come and I can only do a little craft each day.

I love knitting, and I do it whenever I have a spare minute (and some times when I don’t have a minute to spare!)! I used to crochet (mostly toys, and animals), but I’ve wanted to learn how to knit for as long as I can remember, so I taught myself how. Then I came across your beautiful creations, and I’m thrilled at being able to make animals again that are more fun to make, and more beautiful to look at than my crocheted ones ever were! The knitted animals have a more finished look, and a more satisfying outcome!
Thank you so much for sharing your beautiful patterns with us!!!

In my spare time (which there seems to be very little of these days!) I like to be creative, make things for my little girl and run my textiles business which I used to do full-time before I had my daughter. I do keep promising myself that one day I shall teach myself how to knit and crochet in my spare time 🙂

I’m in love with your littlerabbits and the other wonderful creatures that you knit. I personally cannot knit. My husband and I are having a baby next year and I have already added you page and etsy shops to my favorites browser tab. Im my spare time I craft a lot especially cross-stitch and embroidery. I DIYed my sons entire room, from curtains to bedding, to embroidered sheets and towels and blankets, throw pillows and all!!! But really I cannot knit, so I stand here admiring your work.

My middle doing his 2nd year at HS and my youngest, 13, also has autism and will being going to a residential school for children with autism. It is the hardest decision we have ever made. Even harder than moving states to getting him into one of the “best” schools. Luckily, the school is in state, although 2.5 hours away. But 8 miles down the road from college daughter. He hates when I knit and once disposed of all of my knitting needles. We still haven’t found them. Clever boy! He does love animals though. Rabbit “hop hop”!
    I wish you well!

do you know these books that change your life? for me it was “La historia” by Elza Morante. all my life I read so many books, but somehow, this book was so powerfull it actually changed me (it’s a novel, not a self help book…) since this book reading feels different, and it’s hard for me to find a book that will match the power of “La historia” (eccept maybe for other books by Morante, but there are only so few….). the thing is that I feel the same way about your blog. it really was life changing for me. something about your designs and the simple and honest way you share your life, thoughts and inspiration really changed the way I feel about knitting. the inspiration you gave me is now a great source of power for me.
thanks for being here for the past 7 years.

However, I have a lot of free time and no mobility. I am knitting a baby blanket for my girl right now and need to finish so I can get my boy’s done as well. If I could move, I’d love to bake. I enjoy how a seemingly random combination of ingredients to turn into a chemical reaction of tasty goodness.

Soooo nice to have you back in blog land because reading your blog (and that of Lucy at Attic24, Heather at Little Tin Bird, and Jacquie at Bunny Mummy) is one of my favorite pastimes. I can’t wait until you publish a pattern for your knitted foxes. They’re simply the best!

I may be a big failure in cooking – my poor family! – but I surely have some other handy secrets to share with my daughters 🙂

  581. Seven years! How wonderful! I hope I am able to accomplish as much when I have been blogging 7 years! Thank you so much for sharing a little bit of your world (and your talent) with us! I work full time as a software developer, and I have recently become an empty nester. So I started my blog about a year ago to help me discover what the next chapter of my life will be. I would say with what little free time I have right now, I love to read, knit, sew, blog, and spend time with my now grown family at our lake home in Indiana. 🙂

  583. Happy anniversary! Such sweet bunnies. I have three children – one of them only 2 months – who would love to give a home to one of them. As for the things I like to do with my (rare) spare moments, well, they are many and varied.
I love taking my watercolours outdoors with me and quietly paint or make washes on sketches. I love walking in the outdoors, especially as the weather starts to turn and isn’t so hot and uncomfortable.
I love to crochet – I am working on two blankets and an adorable little bear with sad-doggy eyes. I have yet to take up knitting, and it is killing me that I haven’t yet found the time to do so.
I love to cook, bake, and generally make messes in the kitchen. There are jars piled up on counter tops and spare nooks – jars of various kinds of jams I’ve made this summer.
I guess I love to make things. Sewing, yarn, wood, clay, food… I love it all!
And, of course, I love reading your blog!
I heartily wish you many more years of blogging!

  584. It’s good to see you back and that your summer went well. Happy blogiversary. On reading your post I realized how many years it has been since I’ve been following your entries, it was not too long after you started, how the years have flown by!
I used to read more blogs back then but yours and one other are about all I have time for regularly now that I have 2 small children. I also like to read books or magazines (nonfiction nowadays trying to keep up with the kids!), steal a few stitches of knitting (way too many unfinished projects because I usually only knit while we are driving somewhere far if my husband is driving) some basic sewing or doll size quilts, and to paint/draw (though that is one thing I have not has as much time to do as I’d like since the kids came along.)
I really have appreciated you sharing so much of your life, it’s nice seeing the children grow up and seeing your work, it’s an inspiration in so many ways. You really do take the time to look at the beautiful things in your surroundings and are so down to earth. I feel as though we are old friends even though we’ve never met. So thank you for all those things and more.

My little girls are very excited about it. Blog reading has inspired me to finally begin my own blog just last week, and writing about my knitting activities is one of my main drivers. Along with recording family life and the kids growing up, our homeschooling, and my growing interest in nature study. Other than blogging, knitting is what I do with my free time! (Although I really don’t have much of that these days. I’ll have too much knitting time once my children are grown and gone!)

I love your rabbits and other animals, they look so cheerful and friendly.
I’ve just learnt to crochet and am absolutely loving the exploration of something new. I also knit (amatuer level only) and sew patchwork quilts – the quilts were my first love and atarted me on the path of making – which is about to move to a whole new area of makery with cheese.
I hope your next seven years are peaceful, rewarding and happy for you.

I wish I could knit all the time then do something else in my spare time . . . perhaps sew or draw. But for now, wrangling two little boys and keeping the home fires burning allows me a wee bit of time in the evenings to clickety click my needles. Thanks for this lovely little giveaway. xxx Fi

In my spare time at the moment, I enjoy knitting fingerless gloves or “texting mittens” as I call them, which I give away. In October, I’ll be going to the opera once or twice a month at a nearby cinema when they are transmitted direct from the New York Met. There is way too little free time in my days, and too many hobbies. I love crocheting, at the moment I’m obsessed with african flowers. I’m still learning to knit, your bunnies and their dresses were one of the patterns that made me have to learn. Also love to just sit and read a book. Dye wool, garden, started blogging recently.. Too many things, too little time 😉

I would love to win one of your gorgeous bunnies. I bought the fox patterns and the cupcake dress patterns this morning, so I will get onto those tomorrow.
I’m just back from 8 weeks travelling around our huge state of Queensland in my little motorhome. It was wonderful. Got right out into the outback, hence the bus is covered in red dust and dirt. I took all my knitting things with me, but didn’t do any at all, so I’m suffering a bit from withdrawal. I’ve been catching up on a lot of reading as well.
Take care Julie – I love your posts (your website is actually my homepage when I log on) and I think you are marvellous to have kept it going for 7 years, especially with everything else you have on your plate!

I have been following your blog for a few years now and love all your creations. They are so beautiful. I have tried several times to win one of your bunnies but unfortunately have been unlucky so far.
You ask what I like to do in my free time? Well, firstly my free time seems to be being hijacked by my husband and his new business! Every time I get a moment spare, he fills it with errands, paperwork, phone calls or collections and deliveries :-0 It’s shocking behaviour I know, I must have words with him about it. But when I do get sometime I love to bake, sew, make cards and scrapbooks, photograph anything and everything and now I’ve started walking too! I need to be retired I think as I don’t have enough hours in the day for work! Gosh I nearly forgot, I spend a lot of time writing letters to my two daughters who both currently live abroad. They love getting letters. My 12 year old son Skpes them….it’s less work he says!
By the way, how are things with your son? I work is a TA in a secondary school and have just seen a lad finish college after starting in year 7 with him (that’s 7 years with him) and was there in the summer to see him open his A Level results. Not only did he get good grades he got a place at his first choice of University. I am so proud of him, I feel like he is one of my own and now he’s not in school anymore it feels like he’s left home too. I hope your son is doing well, I don’t get to read your blog as often as I’d like because I just seem to be so busy…….I blame the husband. It’s always best to blame them I find 🙂

I’ve loved bunny knitting this summer, your patterns are beautifully crafted, a real pleasure to knit. I also love to cook and tend my garden, as you do – and care for my children.
I admire your dedication to your children; your honesty is an inspiration to those struggling with parenting (that’s all of us with children).

I bought your bunny pattern recently and can’t wait to get started. I retired 3 years ago and keep myself occupied with my garden, my allotment where I also have a couple of beehives, sewing, and of course knitting. I also help a friend to look after her daughter’s pony and I read quite a lot. I grew up in Yorkshire, and emigrated to Vancouver Canada many years ago. Thank you so much for making your patterns available, you do an excellent job. Happy Anniversary.

  777. Hi Julie, wow 7years is a long time, CONGRATULATIONS!!!! I’ve been following your blog pretty much from the start as I was home looking after my baby daughter who is now nearly eight. Thank you, you have provided much inspiration as a mother and as a crafter. What I like to do in my spare time is knit, crotchet, read magazines, cross stitch, spend time with my family and friends and cook. What I don’t like to do is sew up finished projects, hence I have about five knitted toys which I am finishing off at the moment to give as gifts to my daughter and nephew. Thanks for the chance to win one of your bunnies, they are truly a work of art!

I’ve been too tired to knit or sew, except for mending things. However, a new granddaughter is due to arrive in late October. I plan to knit some booties and a hat for her.

I can’t even remember how I came across your blog (I was probably googleing ‘crochet’ just as you were learning to crochet, or maybe during the time of the ‘flowers in the snow blanket’), but I have been hooked since I started reading the blog for the first time.
I crochet in my free time (which I asked my granny to teach me when I was about 16) and today I have a small business making necklaces from crocheted flowers.
I love reading your blog and I think you have the most beautiful designs- I especially enjoy the crochet blankets that you make as the beautiful colour combinations and yarns you use always inspires me in my own designs.

  865. I love to spend my time curled up on the sofa with a cup of tea and a really good book – although I now have (an adorable) 4 month old who takes up most of my time. So sadly, I don’t get as much time to read, and the books I do now read are full of bright illustrations as I’m determined my little tiddler will be a book worm just like her Mummy…but I do get plenty of time to play and have lots of cuddles! I also enjoy painting, writing and have dabbled in knitting (I’ve actually bought your patterns in the hope I can recreate a bunny or 2 for my little one.)
Congratulations on 7 years of blogging, creating wonderful little creatures and being kind enough to share it all.

You are such a talented lady. Lots of family members and friends now have your Easter Bunny cosy and mini Christmas stockings. Yet to find time to knit my first bunny. Have bought the patterns and the now the foxes today! Love knitting and sewing all things crafty. Unfortunately my job is still getting in the way of progress, even though my three children have flown the nest! My best wishes to you and your lovely family. Loving the Garden Room too!

  868. Hi Julie, I love your little cotton rabbits. My mum is a very ‘crafty’ woman but unfortunately at the moment my spare time is taken up studying for my Masters Degree. My biggest foray into crafts so far has been to make my sister cushions for Christmas. However, I have my mum lined up for lessons in practical crafts next year when she returns from living overseas. Congratulations on such a great blog!

  870. Thank you for the free design! I love your blog and have many of your beautiful patterns. In my free time I love to dabble in crochet, quilting, embroidery, and knitting. All self taught with the help of many amazing bloggers, you included! I still class myself as a beginner in knitting as, although I have made 2 of your bunnies, I still haven’t got my head around 2 colour knitting. I have been cheating by using duplicate stitch! It is on my list to do this year.
Your bunnies would have a lovely home with me x
