Bunny knitting patterns

They are ready!

Over the last few weeks I’ve been completely immersed in writing up these patterns, knitting test bits, scribbling and crossing out notes all of which my brain has found a bit taxing as it is out of practice in thinking in such detail! Now I feel a little like a mole who has just tunnelled through the last few inches of earth and emerged out into a bright sunny day and I’m feeling a bit disoriented. Still, a few weeks of gentle paced knitting and low brain activity should sort me out and then I should be ready to tackle another couple of patterns. Though I will also be writing some ‘knitting tips’ posts over the coming weeks as there were lots of tips for things like fairisle knitting that were too wordy to go into the patterns.

Anyway, the first two patterns (a boy bunny with a piebald patch and a bunny girl with a dotty dress) are done and ready to share. I’ve listed them on both Ravelry and Etsy as instant downloads which are available directly after payment – no hanging around waiting for me to email files.

Things have been a bit crazy here over the last week too. Building work started on the garden room and it’s been exciting to see it starting to take shape. We now have a floor and the start of walls, though it’s been all swathed in tarpaulin over the weekend against the wind and rain.

Toby has loved exploring and been crawling in through a wall space to sit inside. He is going to have such fun out there when it is done. I’ll tell you more about it all when it’s finished.

Well, I’m off to knit and rest my brain. Have a good week where you are and thanks for all of the encouragement and support for my pattern writing. I just hope that everyone enjoys using the patterns and is pleased with what they make from them. See you soon x

  1. Julie thank you so much for sharing your wonderful patterns with us all. You bring so much joy to so many people with your amazing knitting. I can’t possibly understand what you go through everyday with a child with autism. I have 2 children of my own and they certainly keep me on my toes! I really think you are doing a fantastic job as a mother and crafter and it is nice to hear what life is like for you and your family.
I am now off to buy your bunny patterns – my little girl will love one! I think you should publish a book – it would go down a storm, obviously it would be a lot of work but the rewards would be brilliant.
    Many thanks again.

  4. Thanks so much for making the patterns. Give your brain a rest and drink plenty of tea 🙂
I am looking forward to seeing the finished garden room as it looks interesting as it is now. I can see why Toby had to explore it. At least that is one change he will enjoy. All you need now is some building weather!

  5. I’m so delighted to have been able to buy your patterns Julie! It’s very exciting!! I spotted they were available on ravelry and bought them straight away and then came over here to talk to you because I realised I hadn’t commented on your last post when I read it (sorry). I’m thrilled (for myself and other knitters) that you have decided to write the patterns (although I know I will only be able to knit a second-rate bunny compared to your incredible knitting!) but I’m sorry the timing of pattern release has coincided with the realisation that things are not going to get easier with Toby. I think you do an absolutely amazing job of looking after your lovely family and dealing with a very difficult situation with such grace and compassion. Lucy xxx

  6. I think its amazing that you have shared your pattern with us, and for all the right reasons. I look forward to knitting one for my grandson. The building work seems to be pleasing Toby, I do hope he enjoys the quiet space when its done and all of you get to use it.
My grandson is on the autism scale and we bought him a little tikes car last week, he loves them at one of his groups but when the weather is bad he can see them in the store room but cannot play with them. I should have taken a photo of his face when he came here on Saturday and saw his very own car sat here, it was wonderful, he played in it all weekend in the living room (luckily its a big room as it rained all weekend) and was much calmer and very talkative. You dont realise how much our babies appreciate their own space even if its a plastic car.
Wishing you warm weather and peaceful days xx

  24. I have just been catching up on your latest posts. Your garden room looks like it will be a great addition to family life. Huge congrats on writing your patterns, I know how tricky it is writing for my embroidery patterns so I can’t even imagine getting my head round knitting patterns! I have nearly finished my very first knitted cardigan for myself! I am sure your patterns will be a HUGE success and it’s so great now they get automatically sent on Etsy. I was reading your post about being a homebody, although I don’t have children I too am the same, especially since I moved abroad to Belgium 12 years ago. I have always been a bit shy, but still sociable, but I find with a new language that I get completely tongue tied and by the time I’ve worked out what people are saying and how I can reply the conversation has moved on! so I understand your feelings. Hugs, Catherine x

  35. Hello and thank you for all your beautiful work. I love the design and photography on your blog. I also went to school for graphic design, I stopped when my twins were born, but that was a long time ago and have no excuse for not jumping back in. Your site inspires me! I bought the bunny patterns, they are very affordable, and am exited to start. I learned to knit when I was very young and started again a few years ago with a knitting group at our library. I still go in spurts, because so many other arts and crafts intrigue me and I need to focus! Thank you again, best of luck with your family and your art.
PS I would love to see more pics of your property, it looks so picturesque compared to Michigan!

At present, I support the PDSA (the people’s dispensary for sick animals), but I will knit your bunnies in support of the Autistic Society, as a nod to Toby and the way you all make family life work. Thank you so much for the opportunity to make the bunnies.

I’m so excited that you’re willing to share these two patterns with us. I bought your egg cozy pattern a couple of years ago, and the instructions were so easy to follow. I was happy with my product, even though there was something missing. I think you sprinkle magic dust on your knits to bring them to life, and the rest of us can’t quite imitate that, but thanks for letting us come close!

  71. Hi Julie, I was ecstatic when I read that you were ready to share your bunny patterns with the rest of the world (literally, I feel) but felt quite moved at the realisation why. I shall be buying all that you will be selling and I think that one comment previously posted that it would be great for the autistic charities to benefit is just so typical of all of your followers and so I shall endeavour to make one of your little bunnies for that purpose. I am SO lucky to be the owner of one of your bunnies and although I would say that, having knitted for the last 50 years(I was eight when I first knitted my first set of bootees) I am quite a proficient knitter, I would be so pleased if it turned out half as beautiful as yours. Your workmanship is exquisite and I know from experience that it is not easy to produce things quite to your standard but I shall enjoy every minute of trying to emulate your work. I send you and your family all the very best and look forward to seeing the photos of the finished garden room.

  96. Thank you so much for sharing these wonderful patterns and all your knitting wisdom and experience Julie! Fantastic instructions from much work! I’ve always enjoyed making the “Teeny Tinies” so it will be a real treat to choose some special yarn and take time to make a full size bunny! Much love to you and your family.

  97. I’m knitting my little girl bunny but am a bit worried about gauge. All I have have is U.S. 2 and 3, clover needles lists the mm sizes but not crystal palace. What brand needles do you use to get the three sizes? . We don’t go by mm size as much here in the states, but with your patterns they are important……loving the ease of the patterns. Great job!! Hope you will add more clothes and I will keep buying!!! So happy!!!
