A little knitting news

Thanks so much for the nice welcome back. Getting so out of touch does feel strange to me when blogging has been such a part of my life for nearly seven years. The list writing is definitely helping me order my thoughts but lists are not the only thing I have been writing over the last week, I have also been pattern writing!

Patterns

Over the years I have avoided writing up the patterns for the little cotton rabbits partly because it is such a lot of work to write something that someone else can follow, partly because I'd rather be actually knitting than anything else and partly because they are so very personal and it's hard to put them out there for scrutiny. And then there is the Toby Factor. If you are one of the people who have written and asked me about availability of animal patterns you will have probably received my standard answer

"Thanks for asking about the patterns for the knitted animals that I make. As
yet I've not written them up but I do hope to in the future when things get a little easier with my son and will keep the blog up to
date with any developments"

Well, it has been slowly dawning on me that things may well not get any easier on the Toby front, in fact with his teenage years looming they may well get considerably harder for a while. His future is uncertain and therefore so is mine, tied together as they are and right now may be as good as things get. So I have been thinking long and hard and decided that if I am ever going to publish my patterns I may as well just get on with it and so that is exactly what I am doing right now. The first one is with pattern testers right now, though I think it will be a few weeks before it will be ready with all the charts, photos and formatting that I intend to include.

I just thought I'd give you a bit of advance notice and an explanation as to why I might not be popping in here so much for a wee while. I am working on them every spare minute I have.

I still plan to make knitted animals for sale, I cannot imagine life without making them now, it has become my main source of peace, tranquility and relaxation. But I'm also mindful of the fact that knitting for around 8 hours a day, almost every day may well be taking its toll on my fingers – they are not as supple as they once were and are a lot more prone to aches. Still there will be plenty more knitted animals from me for the forseeable future – in fact there are plenty waiting for finishing at the moment. Once I get pattern writing out of my system I will be turning my attention back to bunny knitting in earnest.

If you are one of those waiting on my patterns – thanks for being patient with me for all of these years, I hope you won't have to wait much longer!

  1. That is very good news for those of us who would like to buy your pattern. You are being very sensible with your thinking and planning. You are very kind to think of all of us out here 🙂
I can’t imagine how hard and tiring it must be to care for Toby. He is lucky to have such a caring and loving family. I really hope the future is not as hard as you anticipate.

  2. Hello Julie,
that really are great news! I would love to knit one of those sweet little chaps! I already made the egg cosy bunny and truly enjoyed the process and it gave me a sneek peak into how you construct your rabbits. So I am really looking forward for the release of the pattern, but take your time, I think you have a lot of other things on your mind as well with Toby and the garden transformation etc. But should you ever need a test knitter, I would be very happy to do that!

I imagine it feels like giving a little bit of yourself though and in all honesty I don’t think any of us will make them like you do but I’m quite sure we will all want to try!
Hopefully the future won’t be as difficult as you fear and although life isn’t always easy for Toby he is lucky to have such a wonderful Mum!

I’m so happy that I might be in with a chance of making one of your utterly gorgeous rabbits, it’s so kind of you to give us this opportunity and I think I know what a big thing it is for you to share this with us. I hope it turns out to be a wonderful thing for you too. Thanks for taking the time to do it and I hope life doesn’t become as hard as you fear. I guess you have to prepare for many unexpected things though so I hope knitting continues to be your world to relax in.

You are so talented…not just in your design and knitting/crochet; your photos and words add beauty to my life. If your fingers get too stiff….there is always that book to write! Kia kaha, Julie. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family.

Counting down to purchase your pattern, looking forward to making the clothes for the bunnies, knitting is my therapy and as I head into retirement I know this will add to my days. My mother is 85years old, has arthritic fingers but continues to knit booties by the hundreds for the hospital. “A joint in motion, stays in motion”. Thanks for sharing your stories and thanks ahead for the lovely pattern!!!

i remember once you wrote about publishing/not publishing your patterns, you shared a story about cakes which was so touching and really opened my eyes to the potential ‘down’ sides of publishing such personal work and i have been happy trying to buy one of your finished rabbits for a few years 🙂 however, it really will be so exciting to be able to buy and knit up somebunny of my own from your pattern. i have no doubt that the magic ingredients you knit into yours will be missing from mine, but i’m happy to be able to have a go – my rabbit-addicted son will be equally happy, i have no doubt!

  52. Hotcha!!!! I understand your reluctance. “intellectual property” is an awfully cold way of describing the characters and – well, a person who creates, creates a thing of the heart. It is such an intimate act. I have to wrest things out of my own hands to send them away, and I don’t do it often. I make a dozen, and I love each one of them as if they had souls and loved me, too. Making patterns is dodgy because you are giving away your – what – process, your vision, your key, and your control. I wonder how God felt, sending the first souls down with the pattern to make others. I wonder if he was frightened for his loved ones. But I will tell you this: put your pattern in the hands one hundred women and still no bunnies will be alike. What’s more, no one will ever make them as you do. No one.

With regard to the aches in your hands, try one of those squidgy stress balls, have it in your pocket and squeeze whenever you have a minute. I used to take mine dog walking – really helps the RSI. I also wear a thumb brace when necessary as my left thumb gets painful after too much knitting and this gives it much needed support. Bizarrely, since taking up playing the banjo a few months ago, the different ways of stretching my hand have helped too – bit of an expensive rememdy though!

I too am a mother of an autistic son (and of a severely depressed daughter) and crafting is a way of escaping reality. So Julie, when your wonderful pattern is for sale, I will knit a little bunny with a striped t-shirt and call it Toby, in honour of your son and your dedication to him!

I understand about the price of “using your hands” so many hours a day and I’d encourage you to take it easy…and take care of you! I’m sure I will be among the grateful recepients of your wonderful patterns (although I’m STILL a novice!) but we can all wait. Take your time and take care of yourself!

I’ve done all kinds of things since and really loved it, so thank you.
Can’t help but have a tinge of sadness reading your post. You cope so brilliantly and it does sound hard. Two of my nephews have autism and reading your blog is always inspiring for the craft and useful for your experiences with Toby. I hope they help everyone to be more understanding.

Your work is so beautiful! I collect rabbits because I was born on Easter Sunday, and your creations are the sweetest by far that I have ever seen. I am thrilled beyond words to think that I will be able to knit them, and am flooded with color combinations and anticipation! I would dearly love to own a rabbit knit by you, but until then, I can at least have one like yours that I have knit myself.
You are right when you say that life is not going to slow down, and will probably become more hectic as time goes on. My son has had severe health issues, and while he has pulled through with flying colors, life is not slowing down for me, either. I have also recently realized that putting things off until tomorrow is a plan that is not serving me well. So good luck to you as you try to fit in your own adventures, while meeting the needs of your family. Know that I am navigating the same waters, and think we are both going to be successful once we get our sea legs!

Should I attempt the future patterns I know that no matter how much I will try to duplicate your even and perfect stitches, the love that comes through my monitor with each and every animal that I’ve drooled over will be difficult to duplicate. The colors you’ve selected, the cute little climbing flowers on the dresses and skirts, the darling ways you made each character an individual has been so charming.
I don’t believe you’ve ever commented on what your family has said about your “little ones” but I for one, would like to hear some time. My guess is they hate to see them leave the house. Surely you must have a private menagerie that you just haven’t been able to part with?

Very best wishes with your pattern writing venture, please please make sure that you value your gorgeous work and price it accordingly.
