vitamin Y

This week I have been fighting a loosing battle with a cold and for the last 3 days I've been curled up with the boxed set of Cranford, some warm ribena and my knitting and haven't ventured out much. Thanks to the internet I did however manage to treat myself to some new wool in celebration of Wool Week. First to arrive was some soft and springy organic aran yarn from Garthenor in Wales. This batch is spun from Portland fleece and is a lovely buttery cream colour with a nice natural sheen. I've already started a new jumper from it – Shalom (adapted to a pullover from the notes found on Jentide's Ravelry page).

I also fell in love with this fabulous Juno Fibre Arts hand-dyed buffy sock yarn in shade 'garden shed' bought from Tangled Yarns. It is so very beautiful and at the moment I can't bring myself to do much else with it other than admire it, though I do have plans to turn it into wristwarmers when I'm done with using it as an ornament.

I reckon a new ball of yarn is much better at sorting out sniffles and a sore throat than Vitamin C and thanks to my wonderful woolly purchases I'm feeling much better.  The next time I feel a cold coming on I'll definitely be reaching for vitamin Y.

  1. Oh…..I hope you are better soon….but the curled up part sounds lovely!!!
I am finally starting to knit my first bunny!! I have always been a crocheter and hand embroiderer…but it is high time I work on my knitting!! So with the aid of so many great tutorials I am now working on a leg!! My biggest problem has always been…knowing which method of a stitch to use..m1with a right slant or left…but the tutorials on the Internet are such a help!!! So the ” proof of the pudding will be in the eating!!” we shall see how things turn out!!!! You are my great inspiration!!!

I will be succinct here: I simply love this post. Your sweater looks delicious and, I must confess, I have, um, ten skeins of alluring Juno Pearl lying on my shelves waiting to be used. Mmmm, lovely. I’m off to dream on this rainy saturday.

Hope you’re feeling better soon Julie. I too have a cold that’s hung on, such vile bugs about this autumn, we need a good hard frost!

  6. Lovely yarn is the answer to a lot of things – I hope it soon cures your cold.
I can remember when, as a child, my mother came home with skeins of wool, we all cleared off because nobody wanted to hold them while she wound them into balls! We tried to whizz our arms back & forth very quickly to get it over with!!
Beautiful colours you have there, as always.

Isn’t ‘garden shed’ just the most wonderful shade name and I do know what you mean about using yarn as an ornament, I do it all the time! 🙂 Love the buttery aran too.
Glad you’re feeling much better and enjoy the rest of the weekend,

  11. Dear Julie, I am so sorry to hear you are ill. Please get well soon. As for vitamin Y, I’ve been using that excuse for over forty years. It still works but now I have run out of places to store it.
I have a two car gargage, but only my little Vibe will fit in it because the other side has alot of my yarn sorted in neat containers.
My Dad always said I was born with yarn in my hands. I just love the stuff. As soon as I can get one of the kids to take a picture of the gargage and my craftroom, I’ll send it to you.
I always have several projects going at the same time.
Please take care of yourself. I love your blog.
    Best wishes,
    Aunt Bea

  13. I like that, vitamin Y. Your Juno is beautiful, I’d be happy just admiring that skein for a very long time. Next up on my needles are some of the wrist warmers you made a while back, they ones with the buttons (it’s early, my brain isn’t working too good!) And that reminds me, I must Ravel my finished shawl.
I hope you’re feeling better, C had a shocking cold last weekend but doesn’t seem to have shared it … at the moment!

  15. I love your yarn choices! Though HOW many balls did you have to buy of the Welsh organic wool for a sweater, if it comes in 10 gram balls?? The Juno colourway is beautiful. I think I might have to make some of that into a pair of socks for my partner…

  16. Oh deliciousness!!!! Well, not the cold and sniffly part. I’m sorry you are having to endure that. I do love your prescription though! Cranford. YES! Yummy yarns. YES! That sock yarn!! Oh I feel something naughty coming over me…….. a need to get some myself……… might be the fact that I am looking out the window at heavy gray skies and a chill and dampness in the air….. which is supposed to get damper and chillier this week………. Time to stoke up the wood stove and take some of your medicine! 😀 Get better!!!

  17. I had to smile when I read your post, it was a little deja vu moment for me. I bought some Juno Buffy from Tangled Yarn a few months ago, I too admired mine for a little while before making a pair of …. armwarmers! It’s lovely stuff. I hope you feel better soon, enjoy the vitamins.

  18. Oh I hope you’re feeling much better, Julie and that the curling up with all that gorgeous yarn did the trick! My fail safe cold remedy is homemade rosehip syrup – so much so that the children reminded me this autumn to make sure I made stocks to get us through the winter :o)
Your Shalom jumper is going to be lovely in that yarn and I can’t wait to see it.

  21. I am not good at not buying yarn. And I even have a huge box from the old days, when I worked with orlon a lot and made sweaters out of it. These yarns make my hands itch – I wonder if they ship over the ocean, and the mountains and the plains – and if they do, how very much such a miracle would cost? I don’t like to think of you with a cold. But then again, a touch of the ills (a very little touch) can be such a blessing – “The Lord maketh me to lie down – ” No guilt for holding still. We’d bring you soup, you know. (I know you know.) And the garden shed colorway (what a brilliant name) would make bang-up ponies and camels –

  22. Hi Julie
I hope this week finds you feeling better and that the little bug didn’t invade the whole family. Yarns makes me feel better to and that Juno is wonderful looking.

  23. Hi Julie, hope you’re over the bugs now – as it’s half term here you’ll need to be firing on all cylinders. The wool looks beautiful, I realised I hadn’t seen Cranford (had the book years ago)and don’t know how I missed it, so I bought it on DVD. I’m now looking forward to “doing a Julie” – minus the cold, just me, my Debbie Bliss silk and alpaca half made scarf, and the Cranford DVD – for sometime this weekend maybe. The way the weather is shaping I’d better get that scarf finished – oh I also got the wool and pattern for the Poerie flowers after seeing them on your blog last winter – perhaps I’m turning into one of those stalkers, if so I’m a twice a year one! lol
have a good week, love from Portsmouth
