variations on a theme

Sometimes the urge to knit something is like an itch and you just have to scratch it. After really enjoying making my first pair of welted fingerless gloves I am now planning pairs in green, blue and red.

Quince&

Afterall, you can’t really be properly dressed in winter without mittens to match your favourite scarf can you?

And I do have 3 favourite scarves 🙂

And I have found the perfect colours to make matching mittens, with Quince & Co. Lark in split pea, bird’s egg and winesap,

And the Quince & Co. yarn is so smooshy and lovely to knit with,

So, all in all I do feel completely justified in making more mittens (though H may not agree, he thinks that I have too many already)

It would have been a shame not to use this pattern again, it really is very appealing, not least because it knits up so quickly and takes only 1 skein per pair. And perhaps if I keep knitting winter woollies the sun might stay out for a bit, it does seem to have a rather perverse nature this year!

………………..

Moss stitch scarves from my improvised ‘pattern’ (notes here), green and red are in Rowan Big Wool and the blue is Misti Alpacas hand paint chunky.

  1. Oh dear, oh dear, I may HAVE to break down and buy that pattern. Sitting stitching, rug over knees, hot water bottle at back, roll on summer, oh wait, it IS!

  2. That yarn looks so tempting – I’m trying only to knit and sew.. from stash at the moment. Great colours, especially the blue. Can one have too many mittens?

  3. I love the Quince yarns and that really does look like a great pattern. I plan to knit a few more pairs of the Runrig muffatees – pattern link at knitsofacto – but for variety I shall give this one a go too 😀
Gorgeous colours, but my favourite has to be the Pear from the last mitten post 😀

  5. GORGEOUS!!! The blue and red are my favorites. Obviously. 😀 A girl can’t have too many accessories and one has to have mittens to go with a scarf. Otherwise it would be scandalous! It would be the same with wearing a pair of shoes without their laces! 😀 xxoo

  6. Hanging my head in shame I have to admit I have no mittens , I did make myself a pair last year but the dog ate them… those colours are scrumptious though and very tempting. I might have to go Ravelry searching for some mittens done on straights as dpns just aren’t my thing .

  7. Quince & Co. yarn is so beautiful. I am very tempted to buy some but am trying to finish of the projects I do have lined up already. But if these mittens turn out as nice as your other did, I maybe just be forced to buy some of this gorgeous yarn 🙂 Sam xox

  8. You definitely need to make yourself some more (and hide them from the dog!).
DPNS aren’t my thing either – I convert everything I knit to be knitted flat on 2 needles and if you seam them with mattress stitch afterwards you can’t tell.

  9. I totally agree with you about the mitten/fingerless glove thing. I might just have to try this pattern but am still trying to finish my crochet bag and a pair of “Fetchings” for a little birthday extra for someone. Fetching is about the only pattern that I can manage on DPNS as the needles are for Aran weight.
Does the thumb gusset work out OK knitting in the flat on the welted mitts? Also, I know you add a couple of stitches for the seam but what colour would you use on say a Kate Davies Fairisle pattern? Sorry Julie, so many questions!

  10. Hi Julie
Well you need to come and visit us in Canada well Utopia actually as this coming week we will be having temperatures in excess of 30 degrees(not my thing) so on goes a/c.
The mitten colours are wonderful. In this area the yarn stores are very limited. I wish I had as many choices as you do. I have never heard of this yarn and it is beautiful. I have got the pattern for this and am looking forward to knitting them. Just celebrated Canada Day July1 fireworks and all.

  11. Dear Julie,
I am jumping on the mittens bandwagon. I have just purchase the pattern and, as I was gifted a lovely skein of Manos Silk by dear Penny at L Is For Love, I think this would be a beautiful way of using her present.

  12. Beautiful colours Julie especially the ‘split pea’.
With the weather outside at the moment you are probably knitting the right things – have you ever knitted a pair of wellies? Probably need a pair of those too! LOL

  13. I stop in here once in a while to see what you’re knitting or crocheting. You always amaze me with the colors and the variety of things you come up with (besides the ever-lasting cuteness of your rabbits, of course).
It’s been a while, so I just caught up with a couple of months reading and am glad to know that you are getting more help with your son.

PS I’m bookmarking the mittens as they are a perfect candidate for some fall knitting I would like to do!

  14. Is it just reprehensible of me to love Moss stitch so very much but never have learned to do it, or even tried to learn to do it? I think so. You and color – tsk, tsk – showing off. I think I couldn’t come up with such yummy choices if I stood in front of the shelves all day long. I tend to buy sillier things – for making ponies and camels and things. And I need to go to bed. Right away. I keep typing words I don’t mean to – where do they come from? Red instead of right. Red away. Yes. I should go to bed.
