  1. What a great video! It’s fun to see him so happy. I’m still trying to figure out how he can bounce so many times in a row on his back. He must have enough “flip” when he bends backwards in the air, to keep his momentum going. 🙂

  2. I am busting up laughing!!! I dare anyone not to laugh watching that! I wish I could get on and jump with Toby. How delightful. I’m not sure I could get my back to arch like his either. That is so interesting how he likes to arch his back and he’s flying through the air.
That video just made my day!!!
I just took a video of Levi last night that I am going to post soon. It’ another, I dare you not to laugh while laughing. He’s just sitting here by the fireplace with a blanket over his lap. His dog Julie is under the blanket and keeps licking his leg. Every time she licks him, he starts laughing a belly roll laugh.
    These kids!!!
Thanks Julie for the smile and laugh. That was just wonderful!!

  4. Oh, this is such a gorgeously uplifting video – I’m going to save it for days when it’s all been too much and then smile along with Toby. I’m not sure I ever could flip and arch like that even when I was little!

  5. I read this earlier today – then the day unravelled and I forgot to remark upon it. I was a little stunned at the vocalizations – how elemental they were, coming from a person who doesn’t speak. And really – I’ve been on tamps in my life, but his skill – to bounce on your back over and over again, getting that wild height – and I was afraid he was going to come down with his head at that odd angle and break something – but he didn’t. He was milking that movement for every shred of energy. And I am left wondering how he does it. That raw excitement and delight – wow. It was a little overwhelming. Toby, what you teach us –

  7. another of the mysteries of autism…that the world which holds so many things that cause dispair and fear also allows things that create moments of pure joy that most of us never allow ourselves to truly experience. thanks for sharing.

  8. A video to cherish of your happy boy! Indeed the better weather brings so much warmth inside and out! My brother’s autistic grandson has stopped biting himself the past week whilst out playing in the sunshine.

  9. How joyous! Had to hold my breathe at some of the angles and landings but the joy surmounted all. It must be like flying – and who wouldn’t want to do that?

I tell you he really lifts my spirits seeing him fly in the air with great excitement! I was grinning from ear to ear as I watched him. I thank Toby for bringing such joy to my day! 🙂

  12. I am a teacher and our charity this year is Riding for the disabled. They came to talk about what they do and showed us a very moving film. I hadn’t realised that they cover a wide range of special needs, including autism. Seeing your son having such fun has made me wonder whether it might be appropriate for him? One severely autistic boy in our region is now able to say the horse’s name, having not spoken a word for 10 years. Just a thought!

  13. You forget how little it can take to occupy kids! When they are truly happy, it makes everything worthwhile – this is certainly proof of the “joys of parenting”. May the sun keep shining in your back yard Julie!

  14. I was against trampolines because, as a pediatric nurse, I was more than aware of the risks. But my husband received one as payment from an ostrich client. I had to stand point for a long time, but it was one of the best things in our children’s lives and they wore it right out. Definitely a joyous play time.

  15. Whilst sitting watching this video of Toby my husband asked me “what are you watching?” because I was smiling so much. It’s lovely to see Toby having soooo much fun. His vetebrae defies belief! Enough to make any mother’s heart melt. Happy mother’s day x

  17. Hi Laura, thanks for your comment about Riding for the Disabled. Luckily Toby does this with his school. He’s been riding since he was five, and although he only does so once a week for one term a year he’s got rather good at a rising trot. We also have a stable near to us that I try to take him to a few times in the school holdays. Riding certainly seems to help many children like Toby, thanks for the thought x

  18. Wonderful. Has given me a big smile on my face though it would scare the pants off me if I had to watch him in person – the way he flings himself around and bounces up and down on his back. One very happy boy.

  19. Oh, my, he and Olive would make quite a pair. Someday I have to make a video of her doing her twirling dance, where she spins like an ice skater for thirty seconds and then walks away without a shred of dizziness. The mysteries of autism, indeed.
