the christmas play

Berries2

At around 2.30pm today I shall be weeping and sniffling into a large bunch of tissues (in a highly sentimental and very proud way) as I watch Amy perform in her school play. She's pleased as punch to have been given the part of Mary in a play called the Christmas Jazz and sings a very beautiful solo song towards the end. I think part of me will be weeping at it being her last school play of junior school. Next year secondary school will engulf her and I'm sure the changes it will bring to her, although a necessary part of growing up, will cause me to weep many more times!

I know I'll not be alone in needing tissues today so I'll wish all you parents watching your children in their school plays over the next 2 weeks a very happy weep and don't forget to charge up your camera batteries!

PS: frosty berries have nothing whatsoever to do with all this – we've had very frosty mornings here this week and I just thought they looked pretty.

  1. Happy memories 🙂 My son [now 23] sang a solo as Angel Gabrielle at his last primary school nativity and I wept buckets. Reminded him of it only this last Sunday 🙂

  2. It was the West Country Shepherds who got me this year at Johnny’s – they did a good line in ‘ooo arrr’. I love nativities – what on earth will I do when my children are too old to guarantee me a pre-christmas sniffle into my tissues?
Wish Amy luck – she’s a star in so many ways.

  3. How lovely, I assume being Mary she has the starring role! There’s something about children singing that makes me shed a little tear too, especially at Christmas!
I think from experience children cope with going to secondary much better than the parents do, I’m sure she will be fine.
I remember feeling really sad at my daughters last Christmas concert in school when she was in Upper 6th and in the school choir and would be going to university the following autumn. She has now been through uni and graduated 6 months ago, so enjoy every single second of Amy’s performance as it all goes very quickly!!
Lovely berries by the way. 🙂

  5. Good luck, to Amy. I’m sure amid the sniffling in to the tissues you’ll be a very proud mum. I do miss the school Christmas plays now that my two are at secondary school.

  6. Break a leg, Amy! I’m sure you’ll all have a wonderful afternoon. I remember my mother weeping but I think that was mostly to do with her having a bad back and having to sit on the teeny tiny nursery sized chairs for the best part of 2 hours rather than being overcome by my feeble performances!

  7. Was discussing school plays/assemblies/nativities with Pr. C-W last week and she said the stand-out sound in all of these was the ‘click click’ of my needles as I knitted my way through the performances. Perhaps she would have preferred my tears (all though, have to confess they were oten there too)?

  8. They just grow so fast. They turn into people so gradually that we don’t see it till something happens -a moment, or a play. I’m not sure that seeing it is all that good for us, really. The time is so quick. Enjoy the tears – they’re cathartic and they clean the toxins out of your system – all those toxins that come of worry and fatigue. Children are so good for us in so many odd ways. Mine are too old for plays, and their children too young. So I cry about things like this, instead – just another step removed, but no less moved.

  9. Oh – and the berries? They have EVERYTHING to do with what you wrote. I’d have to use to many words to say why – but there you are.

  10. Hi Julie
We did our pre-school nativity today it is my favourite part of our festive celebrations each year. With a group of 2-5yr olds it is often chaotic but such a joy and the parents love it.
    Happy memory making

  11. Hola! I haven’t commented here in ages =( Hope you’ve managed to stop crying by now! The Christmas Jazz sounds very intriguing – hope it went well.
Going to catch up on your last few posts. Bit worried by the foxy footprints – tell Butterscotch and her crew to stay safe and snuggled together! x

  12. The berries look very festive – we are buried under 3-4 feet of frozen snow here at the moment so everything is feeling extra Christmassey! I’m so looking forward to my daughter’s first school play in a couple of years and i shall be a blubbering wreck no doubt. Enjoy sharing in all these wonderful memories while you can. Merry Christmas to you and your lovely family x

  13. I cry at every nativity eventhough my children are grown up . I even shed a tear at the thought of my four year old grandson singing carols at his schools nativity play . My husband says I cry at the drop of a hat but I prefer to think of myself as just an emotional person . Enjoy the play I am sure Amy will be fantastic and it will all go well.

  14. Have been watery eyed already once last week with middle daughter’s nativity play – so sweet! Will be even more watery eyed at oldest daughter’s carol concert next week, particularly as she is just getting over a rather frightening brush with Pneumonia, and will be positively brimming with tears as I watch youngest son do his very first nativity (with lines!!) also next week. It will bring a joyful end to a very tough year for our family – we lost a daughter at the beginning of the Summer in sudden and tragic circumstances – and it is these little poignant, touching moments at such a special time of year that remind me that there are still so many special memories still to be created. I hope Amy enjoys her moment of stardom and she (and you) will be fine at Secondary School – life moves inexorably forward and sadly (and rightly) we can’t live in the past but need to embrace the future.
