wool week

Today marks the start of National Wool Week – a celebration of all things woolly. So, if you needed an excuse to add to your woolly stash, then this week you have the perfect one (not that I know many knitters who need an excuse). I've treated myself to some pure, undyed organic gorgeousness in named breed colours from Garthenor in Wales

Wool
Of course if you're not a knitter you could always celebrate by supporting the lovely creatures that produce our wonderful wool. Saving Rare Breeds are aiming to raise awareness of declining rare breeds and their wonderful work deserves lots of support. You can even sponsor your very own sheep, I've chosen Noah No-Ears to be my special friend for this year but they are all equally lovely.

  1. Wish I could get up to London – apparently there are sheep in Savill Row which has been turfed over! I told the sheep in our local field when I walked there this afternoon but they were unimpressed. Off to buy wool tomorrow.

  2. I love the idea of sponsoring a sheep (or a pony or a chicken!) so thanks for popping us in touch with this worthy cause! Beautiful looking balls of wool you’ve got there too. I’m sure they’d make some very handsome bunnies. Nothing beats buying new wool – full of such promise!!

  4. thank you for the mention julie and huge huge thanks for choosing noah – he is such a sweet boy and is coming along in leaps and bounds since we rescued him – i am now allowed to gently stroke his nose and he will eat from my hand – huge progress from the terrified moth eaten creature that arrived here!
you are a star and we have not forgotten that we promised you some boreray yarn – still trying to source a good spinner – thinking of investing and sending it all off en mass…
anyhoo – thank you from all of us xxxxx

  5. Oh Julie .. that wool is just gorgeous! I’ve been treating myself to some lovely Rowan cottons from England. The Glace is (wait for it) $18.95 a ball here in Australia so it is way cheaper for me to buy it in England. Even with postage it’s almost a quarter the price.
I’ve had a dream of owning a few coloured sheep for years. I have the room now, but I can’t find anywhere where I can get little sheepie wellies!! Because I live on the coast, it’s way too wet and they would get footrot! So, I just love seeing links to places like Garthenor. Thanks for sharing it.

  8. Hi Julie,
What lovely wool. I had a look on the website at the range of yarns. I really fancy some of the Wensleydale yarn, being a Yorshire woman !
What are you going to knit with your yarn?

  10. Oo what an excuse to buy wool! Lovely colours – the darker one in particular. Brown isn’t really a colour I’d think to buy but it does look lovely together like that. Are you planning a majestic organic bunny, or something for yourself?

  11. Wow! Those gorgeous balls of wool make me want to just pick them up and squeeze them! I’m taking a knitting and crochet class, so maybe soooon, I will be able to do something besides dishcloths! I can hope someday, just maybe, to do a cute little rabbit from one of your neat patterns!
Thank you so much, Julie, for making me part of your blogroll! Just wanted to let you know that my blog (Thinking About It) now has a new name (My Southern Heart) and a new site: http://www.mysouthernheart.com
