general stuff

weeks 3 & 4…

…have come and gone and are really best forgotten about. The weather has been mostly wet and windy which has meant postponing many of the plans we had for outdoor activities. Toby has been extremely agitated with lots of aggressive, self harming tantrums and we're not really sure why. It could be the lack of routine or not being able to play in the sunshine or he might be feeling unwell – it's always a guessing game with him, although no-one in our household (and probably our neighbours too judging by the amount of screaming he's done) has been left in any doubt that he's a very unhappy boy right now. When he's like this he needs constant attention so there's not really been much time for knitting which has meant my little bag of lovely new yarn that I treated myself to a few weeks back is still waiting to be got stuck into.

I'm hoping that the next 3 weeks bring a bit of dry sunniness so we can have some fun outside before school starts again. Amy is desperate to camp out over night and I'm sure that a garden day with a little paddling pool action will improve Toby's mood no end! I know that dipping into that bag for a little knitting in the sun would make me a happy bunny! Still, it does make me glad that we're not away on holiday at the moment as life would be much harder if we were dealing with Toby like this in unfamiliar surroundings. There is always something comforting about home, even when things aren't as relaxed as you'd like them to be.

  1. It sounds very tough for you all at the moment. Hopefully the nice weather we’ve had “oooop north” today will make it’s way to you asap so you can all get out in the garden and let off some steam, so to speak.

  2. Sorry to hear things have been tricky, do hope they improve. My own daughter has been rather high maintenance today, suspect the weather doesn’t help. Hope you can feel some peace snuggling up to those gorgeous cushions you made recently.

  3. Oh Julie, I do hope Toby is better soon , it must be so hard for you all . The weather has been a huge pain in the bum if you ask me – so much for ” summer ” and here’s to knitting with that lovely yarn 🙂

  4. awww, I hope things pick up soon for Toby…..it can’t be much fun for him, let alone the rest of the family.
Weather-wise it’s supposed to be a mixed bag this week but am keeping my fingers {and toes} crossed that it stays dry {and warm} long enough for you to have some garden fun!
Not least because I want to see what you create with that GORGEOUS wool living in your snazzy red knitting bag! ;o)

  5. Oh dear sorry things haven’t been so good for you lately. Let’s hope you get some sunshine soon so that Toby can enjoy himself outside, Amy can have her camping adventure and you can turn that gorgeous yarn in that cute little basket into something wonderful!

  7. In June I was thinking what a lovely summer we were having and then when the children broke up it started to rain and has not stopped since! We are also holidaying at home this year so the weather has been a drag but it is nice to see so much of the boys. Wishing you all much love.

  8. Julie – so sorry that the weather is causing so much disquiet for you all. It is really amazing how upsetting unseasonal weather can be – for everyone. You are all in my thoughts and you would be enjoying glorious sun filled days if I could organise them!!! Look forward to seeing your new creations – maybe early scarves this year??? Hope you all get some more fun-filled days before the end of the holidays. JennyH.

  9. Julie, it’s awful here as well. We’ve had only 2 days where it hasn’t rained since the holidays began. It’s getting everyone down, never mind the added stress you have from the change of routine. Hope the sun shines soon…

  10. Julie, you are doing a brilliant job in tough circumstances. It is never easy when the weather stops kids getting outside is it? I hope you manage to find some knitting time soon x

  11. So sorry to hear it is all a bit tough for you guys at the moment. I do hope that you crack the secret of Toby’s sadness soon. It must be so difficult not to know what is wrong or how to help. Just know you are doing the best for all of you and there will be sunshine round the corner.

  12. I heard it has been quite rainy and windy there lately. Sending healing thoughts and sunshine your way. (If it was only that easy to make things better.) you are in the thoughts and hearts of many. Thinking of you all..From New England U.S.A.

  13. My son had unexplained times like this, too. I think sometimes it can simply be growing spurts that set this off. I found that my other “nero-normal” kids would be sleeping more and eating more during a growth, Tim, never did. Since he has difficulty sleeping and eating this makes sense. Your body needs more and it’s much harder to catch up.
Sorry things have been going badly. Hope things level out soon. Wish you all peace and comfort.

  14. I hope you can enjoy the last couple of weeks of the holidays more than you have been. My eldest has had some very angry spells over the past couple of weeks. He is verbal and very articulate, and we’re getting a lot of acting out and aggression and screaming of “it’s boOOoring inside!!!” when it’s tipping down outside with demands that I “make it stop raining, NOOOWWWW!!!”. Even my 4 year old is getting a bit edgy when he can’t walk his favoured route around the block at least once in a day, or at the very least, go into the yard to check the watering cans are all present and correct and properly lined up!
Needless to say, I’ve treated myself to a lot of lovely, squishy yarn in anticipation of autumn knitting, over the past couple of weeks!
