poorly little red hen

Poor Toffee has hurt her foot.

Toffee

No-one is very sure how it happened but it seems most likely that she caught a toe when coming down the ramp one morning. She is limping and unable to scratch around as chickens like to do so is spending much of her day sitting.

Chicies

Hopefully it's just a sprain and will start to get better soon but for now we're
all taking care of her and the other two chickens are spending a lot of
time sitting with her which is quite touching. I'm at a bit of a loss to know what to do but will see how she is after the weekend – I'm hoping she'll be OK. Apart from chicken nursing, we'll be spending the weekend preparing for Amy's ballet show on Sunday and I'm sure I'll have lots of pictures to show off afterwards! Enjoy your weekend where you are.

  1. I always find it moving the way animals will try and show comfort to one that’s ill. When our older cat was ill and not likely to recover, the younger one didn’t leave her alone for more than a few minutes, yet prior to that they’d really hated each other. Sure Toffee’s foot will heal with rest (assuming you can’t see anything damaged or caught in it) – she obviously has the right idea.

  2. Poor Toffee! If only she could knit to help her pass the time =) At least her clucky friends realise she’s not well and are spending time with her. Hope she gets better soon and that the ballet show goes well – best of luck to Amy and her friends.

  3. I don’t know if you have any rodents near by. I once adopted a hen who had her toes chewed partially off by a rat that had entered her coop at night. Hope that isn’t the case with Toffee.

  4. Oh. I’ve known of the same thing to happen in our neighborhood – rodents and also weasels and mink. Now, there’s a dreadful thought. We have become more chicken aware, having been chicken sitters for the neighbors/friends across the street. My husband is very taken with them – especially the white one, because she allows him to scratch her neck. Best wishes for toffee.

  5. I have developed a strange affection for chickens of late. I credit our more-frequent visits for fresh eggs (perhaps I’d be more enamored of cows if I got my milk fresh as well). Best wishes for a speedy recovery, Toffee is quite pretty. 🙂

  6. awww I hope toffee feel’s better soon.
Just a thought, Have you checked to see that she hasn’t got anything ( ie a splinter / thorn) stuck in her foot. Our poor hen’s are in the dog house at the moment. They’ve just discovered that they can jump over the fence into the veg patch lol.

  7. It’s sweet that the other chickens are keeping her company…I did not grow up with them nor have ever kept my own…it is something I’d like to do. Your chicken stories are one of my favorite topics on your blog…them and knitting. 🙂 I hope she gets well soon.

  10. Poor little toffee! I have my fingers crossed for a speedy recovery – take heart that chickens are pretty tough creatures (as my vet friend told me when my Beryl was poorly) Isn’t it amazing how attached we can get to our chickens? I didn’t know about the rats thing – I’m off to check my hen house for possible entry points now – eeek!

  11. Poor Toffee! Chickens do do some weird thing with their feet…if she is resting herself that is probably the best thing for it. She still looks very perky and presumably eating and drinking? She should be on the mend in a couple of days. Hope Amy’s ballet show goes well, I’m sure she will be adorable 🙂

  12. Good luck for tomorrow Amy. I did ballet too when I was your age I loved the shows we did. But none as impressive as Cinderella. To be playing Cinderella’s shadow sounds a great part. xxox

  13. 😀 Chickens are amazing animals !! I would add some antibiotic in the water just in case or I have found Medicated chick scratch really easy to feed when one of my hens is ill 😀 I am sure Toffee will be up and running soon !!
