Garden

We've been lucky with the weather over the last week and have had plenty of sunshine which has meant lots of garden time. Most of the raised beds are planted up now – just successional sowings of carrots and french beans to go in a few weeks. Each of the 1msq beds have polythene fronts and are covered on the other sides with insect netting – it really saves time in picking off caterpillars and keeps off the slugs too. Everything that I'm growing inside is either self-pollinating or doesn't need pollination. It seems to work and and everything is growing well.

It's been good to potter in the garden and the half term week has been fairly relaxed so far.

There's even been a little knitting going on and a little crochet too and my saggy, baggy bag is almost finished. I definitely need to improve my technique and maybe I'll use a smaller hook in future. Still, it's been fun learning something new. I'm off now to make a cup of tea and go and sit in the sun and watch the children bounce and splash!

  1. Wow! Your garden looks like a lovely place to hang out and your beds look fantastic!
Why are the fronts polythene and the rest net? Does the polythene help keep the warmth in? Did you face the polythene side to the sun? I’m very intrigued.

  2. Yah your garden 🙂 Have the chickens been out to explore yet?? Your raised garden beds are such a great idea. I have just locked the guines fowl into my veggie garden to eat the grubs and fertilize and aerate the soil. Pity I can’t leave them in once I plant up…my strawberries are covered in netting in the vain hope of keeping the fowl of them???

  3. Could I ask you where you got the raised beds and netting, etc. from?
I really fancied trying to grow some of my own weg and get my 2 year old involved too but I’m not quite sure where to start.
We’ve had great success with our sunflowers so far.

  4. Really must try those raised beds next year – next door have cut down one of their light blocking trees so I’d now have somewhere to put the beds that would get the sun (wish they’d thin the other trees though). Hope your weather has been as lovely for halfterm as here in the Midlands.

  5. My husband says he wishes he had the discipline to make such a garden. I’m with Kristina – neat and tidy. I love things that are neat and tidy – but they’re beyond me. I think what I love most in these shots (which is saying a lot) is the blue car, tucked under the greenery. Reminds me of the old days around here – now it’s just the puppies, dropping bits of dear things they’ve stolen and chewed to bits.
Here’s the lovely thing: you did the research and the labor to bring the little gardens to fruition and now that’s done. You CAN sit down.

  7. Your veg beds are fabulous Julie! I’m beginning to lose the will to carry on with our allotment – it’s just too big and too weedy and too much work – and the children don’t like going any more so there’s no “family outing” feeling these days :o(
And you should see the state of our back garden………! Hasn’t been touched since we got the allotment.
But hey ho. One day I will have an immaculately tidy allotment, garden, house and pet flying pigs! ;o)

  8. I’m so jealous Julie, I’d so love a garden. The raised beds look great, and I like your table and chairs too. A great place for that cup of tea. Looking forward to seeing your bag.xx

  9. Your raised beds with the covers are amazing. We live in the California mountains and have a terrible time with rabbits and squirrels. Thanks so much for sharing.
And all your designs are so much fun! I bought one of your patterns on Etsy and can’t wait to make some bunnies for my grandsons.

  10. I love the raised beds with the netting. My garden is very small and I think that this could be the answer for me – it looks like they are quite easy to weed and look after?
