snow!

Sure enough there was a large enough fall of snow on wednesday for the schools to be closed and remain closed ever since. So we've been enjoying the world outside our window while snuggling around the fire.

Snowy day

Of course there was a brief snowman building session follwed by a quick dash back inside for some hot chocolate.

The poor old chickens don't quite know what to make of all this white stuff but we've been keeping them warm with daily feeds of porridge and honey mixed into a mash with their regular layers pellets.

It's all very beautiful but I'm hoping it won't last too much longer – having the children off from school means not much is getting done!

  1. I’ve been seeing pictures on the news about all the snow you have had and the school closures. The children certainly seem to be making the most of their unexpected holiday.
Enjoy the winter activities ~ it isn’t often that there is enough snow to build a snowman!

  4. The pictures of the snow are beautiful… I love the ice on the spider’s web and the mesh of the chicken wire!
Being from the southern hemisphere we are having some very hot weather at the moment. I’m sure the snow loses it’s appeal after a while but it does look lovely (for a while anyway!)

  5. We had about six inches on Tuesday and can’t get the car out of our close or the lane beyond – frustrating as the main road which we can see about 50yds away is running freely and it’s very bright sunshine outside -views from our top windows are fabulous. I’m putting some on my blog. No-one young enough to make snow men here but we love the smiley face on yours! Our garden is full of little birds stocking up from the bird feeders.

  6. We’ve had a couple of inches but it’s been in 3 or 4 snowfalls so never enough to justify closing the school. I’ve been in helping this mornign and the poor children aren’t even being let out to play in it – I can see why but it seems a shame and they’re going a bit cabin crazy!

  7. Don’t get me started! This type of thing makes me ashamed to be British! With the schools closing, it just gives the children an attitude that quitting is ok! It’s Health & Safety gone mad.
    I’ll leave it at that!

  8. We have freezing fog here in Northern Ireland this morning, so with that and all the frozen snow it’s a bit like living in Narnia. However I am growing a bit tired of it. I can’t believe I’m actually saying this but I quite wish it would rain and wash it all away! Bring on the Spring. 🙂

  9. Mum saw the little stockings I knit last year for the first time. She thought they were wonderful, in fact there are now a little group of 80 something pensioners in Lancs knitting them for next year’s charity tree. Your magic keeps on reaching out Julie. Thank you!

  10. It is beautiful. We get snow usually once or twice in the winter if we are lucky, but it is just a very light cover and melts very quickly. Bet the kids are loving having some time off school.

  13. My chickens haven’t exited the coop much the last couple of days even though their run is fairly snow clear (being covered), the garden however had about 9 inches.
    Lovely photos.
I have to say I’d like spring to roll on now.

  14. Because we live in the mountains of Utah, we are not unused to that amount of snow. Schools rarely close. This year, the ground has been white since the first of November without a break. That IS unusual. I have to laugh about global warming – this is a strange way to go about it – we’ll be 5 degrees or less tonight, and I’m thinking of feeding the horses the same thing you’re feeding the chickens. How do these animals survive it outside? One year, church was cancelled – we spent the entire Sabbath out in the road with shovels and tractors, trying to dig out the neighbors who couldn’t dig themselves out. The snow was gathered into piles over my head all along our driveway. The dogs disappeared when they bounded out into it, and so – nearly – did my four year old.

  19. That frosty web picture is SO COOL! We had a cold spell mid-December but I never saw a frosty web like that! This year we’ve had all of about three inches of snow so far, last year we got about 3 feet in one day!! We continued to get snow the rest of the winter…it was the most snow I’ve ever seen in one winter.

We got loads more snow overnight and it’s been snowing on and off all day – so maybe next week will be better???!!! ;o)

  23. You’re so lucky. We’ve had one pathetic snowfall here in Vancouver. Compared to last year’s record breaking snowfalls, it’s sad. And it doesn’t bode well for the Olympics in Feb.! Enjoy every flake!
And oh my goodness – the spider web! That could go in a photo contest!
