Garden friends

Amy and I have really been enjoying watching Springwatch on tv this last week. We've been following the progress of all the baby birds and badgers and we've been looking round our own patch to see what we can see. There is a family of dunnocks nesting in the clematis and in our nest box we've had great tits who have just fledged. This little chap wasn't sure about flying to begin with but by the end of the day he joined his brothers and sisters up in the tree.

Baby great tit

We also spotted a lovely big fat frog and there's definite evidence that the hedgehogs are very busy at night in the undergrowth. I don't yet have any pictures but they've been eating the food we've left out each night and our new hedgehog box has had lots of leaves pulled into it.

Frog

Lastly, there was this little chap.

Mole3

I've been thinking about a mole for ages and he's my prototype. I have a few tweaks planned but hope to have some moles ready for Etsy soonish.

Enjoy the rest of your weekend

  4. Hello,
I just love the start of this Mole.
I am sure he or she will turn out lovely.
I will be a more frequent visitor of Etsy again, see if I can buy a garden friendly mole to live in my home.

  5. Perfect! A very moley mole. So much so I had to do a double take – I thought – hello, he’s a perky chap for a nocturnal creature! And when I looked again I realised why! 🙂 Beautifully cute! t.x

  6. We have a cuckoo that likes to sing at 04.30 each morning and crows that have taken to having what sounds like a major domestic outside our bedroom window an hour later! I think I need that lovely little mole to come and console me!

  8. Hey Julie,
How rewarding to know that your garden has such a lovely balance between providing for you and providing for nature. That must be such a wonderful feeling!
Oh and the mole! All my family…husband and all…oohed and aahed at him. None more than me! Ho appropriate that he should pop out of a tunnel of yarn.
    You’ve brightened my day!

  9. It is so wonderful the little creatures that arrive and stay in your garden – being from Australia we don’t get hedgehogs, badger or moles. Could be some under Ella’s fairy tree though – should go look!

  11. We’ve had wood pigeons nesting in our carport for the last 3 years and one nested in my peg basket last year. I love watching the babies learning to fly in the garden. No hedgehogs here but we do have a possum who is living in the roof and running around the garden every night (we would like him to move out!)
    Love your mole, very cute.

  14. I hardly dare mention the wildlife I just spotted in my garden. It’s brown and rhymes with ‘hat’. Freaking out somewhat now! Would far rather have little velvety moles.

  17. Very cute little guy. We don’t have moles in Texas – at least not in Austin. We also do not have hedgehogs. I need to lookup a dunnock – but we do have titmice! Thanks for the springtime update. Nice to hear someone is having bearable weather as we are heading toward 100 (farenhiet) :[

  20. There’s certainly plenty going on in the LCR garden! Nice, normal, peaceful things like frogs and hedgehogs. I was eating breakfast in Mr Boyfriend’s garden last week and a big fat pheasant plopped out of one of the trees at the back. I’m not sure who was more surprised: me or the bird. Perhaps I should tell Springwatch about that?? It must’ve used a stepladder to get up there.
