a funny week!

It’s been a bit of a strange week here as our routine has been thrown out by Toby’s school play. It happens once a year and means that he goes to school between 4 – 9pm for the middle three days, having his tea there and then doing a performance. He’s coped (just) and although I’ve not managed to get anything done all week (other than keep him entertained) I’ve enjoyed having him around – just him and me, and I’ve been able to concentrate on him without feeling that I’m leaving Amy out. On wednesday evening Amy and I loved seeing him in the play. Toby was quite bewildered by the whole thing but not upset and some of the older children were really amazing and gave a joyful and spirited performance despite some severe disabilities – there wasn’t a dry eye in the hall!

Anyway, because of the change in routine I’m really behind with replying to emails (again) and not much knitting or housework has been done. I did manage to make some real cupcakes though (inspired by a picture I saw over at Dotty Cookie of some cupcakes Ali bought) and I was really pleased with how they turned out. I just made a regular victoria sponge cake mixture, plopped spoonfuls into individual cases then swirled half a teaspoon of strawberry jam through each one and baked as usual. I topped them with pale pink glace icing and a dried strawberry (I couldn’t get the freeze dried kind so settled for the chewy dried ones).

They went down a treat at Amy’s school afternoon tea and looked quite appropriate as we were raising money for breast cancer charities.

Have a good weekend, it’s a bank holiday here and looks like rain so we’ll be bed bouncing!

  1. That’s awesome that the play went so well!! I think it’s excellent that EVERYONE gets to try different things out and it’s so great that it touched so many people! 🙂 Great cupcakes too!!!

  3. I’m so happy the play was a success! Those cakes look fantastic too- I’m making a mental note to try swirling jam into any cakes I make in the future, it sounds like a tasty idea 🙂

  6. Wait wait… your kids have afternoon tea at school? Really? My kids just come home smelling like goats. ;-S The cupcakes look delightful, and I really like the idea of the jam and dried strawberry. I am a complete pushover for cupcakes!

  7. Errrr… when you say the cakes (which look triffic btw) ‘looked quite appropriate’ b/c raising money for Breast Cancer Charities… is it b/c of the colour or … errrr… the.. umm… form?

  8. oh, i’ll bet the play was awesome. of course there wasn’t a dry eye in the house! anything good (or bad) involving my son brings me to tears so fast! last year at princess’ dance recital there was one dance done by a class of special needs kids – and the whole place was bawling – so so amazingly special.

  10. I’m so glad you got through Toby’s “funny week” well. I’m sure that the play was wonderful, and I can believe that there certainly weren’t any dry eye’s to be found.
    Those cupcakes sound so yummy, and they look even more delightful. You are an all-around talent 🙂 Astounding to say the least.

  12. What a great idea to change the school hours so the kids can do a play. At our school the kids do a full day then come back at 5.30- 8pm for plays. It really wears them out. Well done to Toby for getting through the changed times and the play.
    Love the cup cakes they look shop bought not homemade, fabulous.

    I know you don’t get alot achieved but it’s good to have a different sort of week occasionally. I’m having quite a lot of different sorts of weeks at the moment as my routine has changed quite dramatically and rather than worry about it i’ve decided to embrace it!! I’m not surprised the performance was a weepy, they usually are, but those cakes look great, i used to bake alot but then when my sons were diagnosed as wheat and dairy intolerant, i struggled for a while trying to produce alternatives, but they were all rubbish so i gave up on baking!!
    Pity really as i did enjoy it!

  19. Toby’s play sounded very uplifting – what an achievement to be able to get up in front of so many people! Your cupcakes look delicious and very appropriate for a breast cancer event – I have never heard of dried strawberries before.

  24. Great that the play went well :0) We made banana cake today – yours look much nicer (erm, but then I did have a 2 and 4 year old spooning in the mixture…)
