7 things…

I am so rubbish at taking up tags so I'll start by thanking and apologising to:
The Mighty Sally, Marie Chantal, Claire , Little Jenny Wren, Jane, Samantha  and anyone else who has tagged me recently or otherwise!

I ramble on so much here that it's difficult to think of things that you might not already know about me but here goes:

  • Like Jenny, I was regularly mistaken for a boy when little, largely due to a misguided Mummy weilding haircutting scissors (thanks Mum!) here is the photographic evidence (it's a wonder I grew up to be so normal!!!):

Bad_hair_day

  • Staying on a hair note, I quite like the fact my hair is now going grey – I've not had it coloured now for 5 years (despite intense pressure from my friend Karen). I don't mind that my body is aging and am quite comfortable with all the sagging, wrinkling and greying going on.
  • I find polka dots very pleasing in all shapes and forms (here's a recent attempt at knitting them)

Polkadots2

  • I didn't learn to drive until my 30's and failed my first test when I crashed into a roadsign! I still maintain that it was because I couldn't turn the steering wheel properly, being nearly 8 months pregnant at the time!
  • I have a really good memory for anything that rhymes – poetry, song lyrics etc and can recite most of the Miffy and Dr Suess books from memory. A useful party trick (well children's parties are the only kind I get to go to these days!)
  • I hate ironing (and most other forms of house torture work). I do however love cooking which is far more creative and satisfying than window washing or dusting.
  • Despite vowing as a teenager never to grow old and boring and watch nature or gardening programs I find that I am really enjoying the coverage of the Chelsea flower show this week and my favourite tv programmes include Coast, stuff on the history channel and anything with David Attenborough (there you go M&D – I've become enlightened in my 40's!!)
  • I'm throwing in an extra fact simply because I like this picture that I took recently and couldn't think of another way to use it. My favourite colours are red and blue, especially in combination.

Pears

I'm going to be rebellious and not tag anyone, it's taken me so long to take up the tag (Sally tagged me in January – I'm sorry it took me so long Sally!) and most people have done it by now anyway! Also my little man is off sick at the moment with Green Snot Virus so I have to go and play nurse now!

  1. Julie – I loved reading all this. Spooky, as I didn’t learn to drive until I was 35 and only because Kevin encouraged me and paid for the lessons. At 35 I passed first time and was really over the moon but I failed three times when I was 17 and felt hopeless. I couldn’t afford to carry on learning with just a Saturday job then. Now I love driving and after 12 years still do and consider myself to be a careful driver. I also HATE ironing.
Hope Toby soon gets well. Have a nice Bank Holiday weekend.

  2. I love these seven facts, its so nice to find out a bit more about someone. I loved your seven. I admire the going grey bit, I am paranoid about my grey and colour it on a regular basis. I would love to have silver grey hair, you know that real sylish colour. I used to love the fashion presenter of the clothes show (showing my age again) who had a silver streak through her hair, and obviously still does. As for your baby pictures, just too cute. Polka Dot fan myself, not that my knitting would come out spots more blobs!!!LOL

  3. I can so sympathise with the scissor weilding mummy hair cuts. I have photos of me aged four or five with a fringe that looks like Henry V – not attractive on a small girl!!. However, having had a go at trimming my four year old nephew’s fringe lately, I now know why mine always looked so strange – small children just won’t sit still when you’re weilding the scissors!!

  4. What lovely facts! I’m only 35 and have loads of grey which I’m afraid I do colour as the rest of my hair has faded to “dead mouse” (much more drab than “live mouse”!!!!) But colouring my hair is about the only thing I do to it as I often can’t find a hairbrush and have never really worked out how hairdryers and brushes work in combo! The look is definitely “natural”! Lucy
P.S. love red/blue combinations and just bought some fabulous 50s inspired fabrics in red white and blue with polka dots and floral patterns – I’ll post a photo sometime.

  5. Good for you being a rebel Julie! It is hard to tag anyone anyway, as everyone seems to have been tagged already.
I enjoyed the interesting facts – I too can relate to the hair cuts by Mum, which were sometimes pretty horrendous! I just wanted to be ‘normal’ and go to the hairdressers like everyone else – something I didn’t experience until I was about sixteen!

  6. I don’t think I’ve seen a picture of you as an adult as I’ve only recently started reading your blog. However, you are just as I imagined! I imagine you look about the same now as your childhood photos! Ok enough already! Now where are those pesky wabbits of yours? I’m eagerly awaiting the Meagre wooly rations! Tee Hee!

  7. So pleased to see I’m not the only one who didn’t learn to drive until I was in my 30’s and I too was pregnant. Strangely I also like my wrinkles and grey hairs, can’t say as I’m keen on the sagging though. After spending a fortune on expensive highlights when I was younger I suddenly discovered that I actually liked the colour of my hair just as the first grey starts to appear. Typical huh?

  8. Seems quite a few crafty bloggers are late drivers(or in my case nondrivers).Isn’t that interesting. As for the grey hair, after many false starts I have now let my hair be what it wants and it wants to be grey. Funny that I am grey and my mum who is staring 80 in the face is still a blonde with the help of a little bottle. We must look funny together.

Thanks for your words of advice on blogging. Ideas are rolling around in my head. I just need to get my courage up and get going!
I hope Toby feels better soon.

  11. I think the short hair for girls was quite common when I was a lass. I was a real tomboy and loved being mistaken for a boy! Where have all the tomboys gone? I almost never see a girl with short hair now . . girls are all long haired, wearing pink and going to sleepovers!

  12. I know the feeling of being mistaken for a boy, I had that same hair doo in 1971!
There is no shame in enjoying your age, I do it all the time.
Hope Toby is well soon and back on his tramp.

  13. don’t love dusting! that is odd, I’m just joking.
This post has made me feel wierd and normal all at the same time,
obviously I cannot divulge any further, I have my reputation to up-hold.
I love the fact, though that you have decided to grow old(er) gracefully, how elegant.

  14. Such interesting facts – and gorgeous photos. I love how you threw the last one in. I, too, have a photo of some red pears I bought last week – but can’t seem to fit it in with any of my current posts!

  15. Love, love the photo of you and the polka dots AND I hate ironing too. However, I do like other forms of housework even if I don’t get around too it very often. I seem to recall that I didn’t learn to drive till I was thirty either probably cos I reversed up a kerb when I was 17 and it put me off for years.

  16. Hey you look like a gorgeous little girl. People called me a boy from 5 till 7 years, and again from 12 till about 14! These periods coincided with the cutting of my very very long blonde hair into feather cut the first time, and a princess Di cut the second time! I love my aging body too, its a testament to all the life, adventures and experiences we have had along the way. I even love a couple of op scars!

  17. I’m not sure why it took me so long to comment on this, but I’m so glad you did the list! And, trust me, it’s no big thing that it took this long…I’m not the most punctual person either. I start mat leave next week, so I will have more time to comment on everyone’s blog…well, until I go into labour anyways 😉 I love the childhood photos! You are the cutest thing ever! It’s so fun to see other peoples baby pics. I think I may do that on my blog too. lol. thanks for the inspiration!
