You must be mad….

I recently followed a link to a blog where the relative insanity of knitting cakes and pies was being pondered on. Well, she does have a point, it is a slightly bizarre thing to create but then so many things are bizarre these days and at least they’re too soft to be used as a dangerous weapon. A couple of people have asked me why I knit cakes and I suppose the simple answer is that it’s fun and people want them. The first ones I made were a bit ropey and it took many different attempts to get the shaping as I wanted it but it was satisfying being able to finally produce something that looked like the vision I’d had in my mind. The nice thing  is that the design is still evolving and so it never gets boring to me. I was totting up the other day and I’ve actually made over 250 in the last 5 years!

Anyway reading the post that questioned why anyone would possibly want to make knitted cakes made me remember something I made last year and co-incidentally it is the right time of year to be showing these. There, if you want to ponder the real insanity behind knitted objects then get an eye-full of these babies!

Easter_eggs

Although I’m fairly happy with the pattern I never went into production on these because I couldn’t see anyone really wanting a knitted Easter egg (chocolate ones are infinitely preferable in my opinion). But sometimes it’s just nice to have the challenge of making something you’ve not made before and creating anything from scratch is, well, life affirming. Something the elderly people who created this knitted room would definitely understand.

Anyway, the Easter school break is upon us (arggggggg!!) I’ll be out of the loop for the next 2 weeks, will try and keep up with any emails but be patient with me! See on you the other side of the abyss!

  1. If you’re mad them so am I, as I love your knitted cupcakes. I think I will set up a little display of them in my glass kitchen cupboard! The knitted Easter Eggs are fab. Happy Easter Julie and family.

  2. bizarre or not, there is something so delicate and fascinating about your cakes! it’s like in the Charlie and the Choc. Factory movie (newer one) when Charlie says “Candy doesn’t have to have a point, that’s why it’s candy.”
your cakes are eye-candy – knit on!

  3. Why anyone would want to make knitted cakes? Because they are pretty, I think that’s a sufficient reason. Don’t see why it should be stranger than wanting to crochet doilies. I’m sure lots of people would want your eggs as well.
Personally I love knitted, crocheted and felt sweets, so there’s no strangeness to me there!

  7. I do find it very funny that people like to knit things not clothes or blankets but I agree they are darn cute.
Have a very wonderful two weeks off, I am also on holidays with my boys. When I am pulling my hair out I will think of you calmly knitting away.
    Happy Easter.

  8. It’s funny, I was just thinking about the “sanity” of knitted cakes today when I bought a book that has knitted cupcakes in it (and trust me, they’re not nearly as cute as yours.) I’m sure my family will think I’ve “lost it” if I ever get around to making them. Your bunnies take the cake (!) though — I’ve just found them but haven’t seen any in your shop yet. I don’t know how you bear to part with them! I wish I knew a publisher — I’d send them your way — I’m sure there’s a long line of us that would love your book! Have a wonderful break — you deserve it!

  10. Oh so very, very cute little easter eggs!! Surely not as fattening as the chocolate kind – so there are more benefits to your creations! And always remember to embrace the maddness – its what makes us who we are and what makes us different from everyone else. MAD is GOOD! As always your eggs are devine, I have trouble believing that anything you make could be less that scrumptious!

  12. Oh my how sad to not know the joy of knitting or wanting to knit something like a cupcake, still we are all intitled to our own opinion or it would be a very dull world.

  14. I know logically that knitted cupcakes should make no sense, but there is something so viseral, so intensely satisfying with them that they just do. And your knitted Easter Eggs are superb!!!
Good luck for your Easter school hols. My younger two start their school break after Thursday of this week. However while my oldest obviously gets the Easter holidays, because he now goes to high school across the border, he doesn’t start his holidays until a week later. I suppose I can be thankful that they overlap by one week.
    Have a wonderful Easter.

  16. I LOVE knitted cakes! And all kinds of knitted food… and felt food…
Plus, if someone REALLY wants a reason, I noticed they’re selling knitted doughnuts for something like £7 a piece in Liberty’s, so there’s a reason in itself.

  18. oh for heavens’ sake, why does ANYONE create ANYTHING? And who is to say and judge what is necessary or not? Taking that line is just a long, grey path to Boringdom-on-Sea, the world NEEDS your lovely knitted cupcakes and eggs, it can only be an improvement on the evil rubbish government splurges our money on. Rant over. 🙂
