Early morning sock knitting

Early morning knitting

Socktops

Amy is going on a school trip today so we were up at 5am this morning. After dropping her off it didn’t seem worth going back to sleep so I’m now sat in bed with a little sock knitting to bide the time until it’s time to wake Toby up. For some reason I’m a bit hooked on sock knitting at the moment which is quite a good thing because I have built up a rather large stash of gorgeous sock yarns. It’s good to be whittling down my stash a little (and of course it means I can go browsing for a little more once I’ve made room for a few new skeins). My particular favourite sock yarns are The Uncommon Thread ‘Tough sock’, Eden Cottage ‘Hayton’ and anything from The Wool Barn. With all that lovely yarn it looks like sock knitting will be much more common here in future and happily I’ll also have some lovely leftovers for bunny cardigans and sweaters.

The patterns I’m working from are ‘Lucky me Socks’ by Pia Kammeborn (above) and ‘Emily’s Favourite Socks’ by Emily Foden (below) and notes on the yarns I’ve used etc. can be found on my Ravelry project page if you’d like more details.

Well, I think I have time for a few more rows before I go and rouse Toby with his breakfast tray of toast and gingerbread men, see you soon.

  1. Hi Julie. I had a strange dream about your knitting last night, and here you are this morning, with your lovely socks. Both those patterns are in my library, waiting to be done. Will you bring them next week? I love the colours you’ve chosen and I agree, socks are an excellent way of reducing the stash….. to make way for more yarn! xxxxxxx ps where has Amy gone??

  2. Thanks so much 🙂 I am really enjoying knitting these – hope it lasts until I have complete pairs and I’m not left with 2 single socks! With any luck I’ll bring along at least 1 finished pair next week. Amy’s gone off to Alton Towers for an end-of-term, post-mock-exams treat!

  3. I love Emily’s favourite socks pattern. So easy to follow! Love the yarn you have used. Marlee socks by Cabinfour is what I’m knitting at the moment. And bluebird café socks by Olivia Villarreal are next. Socks are a great portable project, and there are so many amazing patterns and yarn out there. Off to check out your suggestions.

  4. Yes you’re right Caroline and I think the Emily’s favourite socks pattern is one I will come back to and knit again. Thanks so much for your suggestions too, I think I’m a bit hooked on sock knitting now so will be checking those out in a moment!

  5. Hello Julie,
I want to tell you about our sock story. My 70 year old husband, Hugh, has had Type 1 Diabetes since he was a teenager. You might not know that diabetics should NOT wear socks with elastic at the top. My darling old Aunt Edith was still knitting his socks with imported German sock wool at the age of 100 years. I asked her for the pattern (which was in her head). She carefully told me what to do (self: writing as fast as I could) and when she got to the foot part, she looked at me sadly and said she didn’t think I would manage! She left many pairs so I do not think that I will ever have to learn this trick! I dutifully darn all holes or where they thin on the ankles. My husband’s endocronologist asked him who knitted his socks and was amazed to hear it was our 100 year-old aunt! Regards, Barbara Bennett

  6. Your posting of your work is very lovely . I use my own Basic sock pattern when I knit socks for family . I like the sock patterns from a book called the Eclectic Sole by Janel Laidman, esp. Simpliciy pattern!

  7. I always love your yarn choices. So soft and subdued…just lovely! Beautiful socks. I’m so glad you are able to carve out some time for yourself in your busy day with Toby, it’s so important to take care of yourself as well as your family. I found I did much more knitting and quilting when I had all three children living at home than I do now that they’re all grown and gone. I needed it more then!

  8. I am knitting a pair of socks right now, too! What inspires me the most about your knitting are your color choices. I love the colors you choose for everything!! Because I live int he desert, I usually make ankle length socks, so I don’t have the beautiful fair isle designes on mine. I have to rely on my yarn for design.
    You inspire me!!

  10. Your photos always inspire me. Sadly I have hardly an time for knitting as the driving the teenagers keeps me busy. Those sock blockers are lovely too 😍

  11. I think I’m probably more than a little biased but I think there should always be time to knit socks! There are so many beautiful sock yarns around and they’re such portable projects – and as easy or as complicated as you want to make them as well. I do like your Fair Isle ones, they’re very lovely 🙂 xx

  12. Dear Julie…I posted but it seems to have disappeared 🤔 Happy to see others get “obsessed”. I currently am obsessed with cabled baby blankets with matching cable cardis & a matching LCR . All made for babies yet-to-be-born! 14 blankets, 8 cardis & the pieces of 10 LCR ready to assemble. The assembly is the real challenge of course! If you ever offer a workshop on assembly I may plan a vacation around it! Obsessions fuel ⛽️ us lol! Enjoy!
With admiration, Lori from Port Perry 😊
