autumn knits and woodsy walks

Time seems to be whizzing past faster than ever at the moment and I can't be the only one who feels a sense of panic every time there's an advert break on TV, full of Christmas urgency as they are. But I'm not feeling remotely Christmassy yet so I'm thinking I'll just stick my head in the sand and listen to the radio instead. In my mind it's still early autumn, a notion helped by the fact that many of the trees here are still in green leaf but it is a little wishful thinking I suppose. Last posting dates for Christmas really aren't that far away so I'm doing my best to finish off a batch of animals. I am getting there but progress is slower than planned. This is Albie and he's all ready to travel but his brothers and sisters are still in need of tails and buttons. I hope to have them ready in the next few days and will be sending out emails to my mailing list shortly with details of when they'll be available to buy.

As mentioned lots of the trees here are hanging on to their green, although there's a definite shift in the colour spectrum and some are already resplendent in autumn bright colours. It was recently half term break here and wood walks are always a good way to keep Toby busy (happily he's back to enjoying them again). Being close to ancient broadleaf woods with a network of well trodden pathways is something that I am extremely grateful for and they never disappoint whatever the season but autumn is really the time when they are at their best.

There is something so very peaceful about walking quietly in a wood and it always does me the power of good not least because it's a truly sensory experience…Your nose is delighted by an earthy blend of growth and decay. In the heart of the wood you can stand completely still and loose yourself in the gentle sounds; the sigh of the breeze moving the leaves; the chatter of small birds; the drilling of a woodpecker somewhere off to the right; the sudden, startled scamper of a squirrel as it looks up from burying acorns and realises you are there. With a kindly wind direction you may even be able to creep up on a muntjac, underfoot moss masking the sound of your approach until you are close enough to see individual hairs on his coat as he browses his way through the undergrowth on tippytoe pointed hooves.

Sadly I cannot capture the sounds or smells here for you but I can share some of the beauty that the woods near us provide…

  1. As always, your photos are so very beautiful, Julie – I love that Albie’s scarf perfectly matches the Autumn leaves beside him. Seeing lots of your disembodied animal heads waiting for bodies always makes me laugh – they look so funny!!
I feel the same about Christmas – I make a lot of Christmas cards and haven’t started yet even though I really should! Head in the sand!

  2. Oh Julie your woodland photos are so beautiful and yes you have still a lot of green, ours are definitely wearing their autumn coats and some have shed their leaves completely. How absolutely brilliant to be able to get that close to a little deer, a real privilege.
As always your little critters are a delight…..so cute all lined up in the drawer.

  7. So good to get an update! We have walking woods close to us as well & they are an endless source of entertainment! The Autumn colours this year have been spectacular and the days quite warm. I savour the sunny days as the snow will be flying soon. Your little treasures are so adorable…poking out of the drawer they look even more adorable…if that is possible.

  9. What Karen said is going through my mind, too. The creative outpourings of all the artists in the world will be society’s salvation. Things look very dark to me here, today, and I so appreciate your post for lifting my spirits.

  10. Love your photos. On this side of the world the weather is racing into summer. It’s lovely to think of a cool climate. I’m glad Toby is liking his walks again. Being on the spectrum I love the calm that comes from nature. Thanks for all your lovely creations.

  11. What a beautiful post: very well written and lovely, calming pictures. It feels as if we made the walk together! Albie is a piece of art. How do you manage to make the clothes fit so perfectly every time? Never too wide or too narrow or too whatever. You must make adaptions to your patterns, depending on the yarn you are using?

  12. Thank you for this lovely post and photos. Noisette says she would love to invite Albie to tea and then marry him! Your drawful of little animals is wonderful, and I have enjoyed walking with you and Toby in the woods. I actuelly live IN a forest, and I unfortunately have to always use the same way when I walk, as I lose myself otherwise… but like you I am lucky to sometimes meet wild animals. Trying to remember to prepare Christmas too…. x Anne

  14. It feels so nice when you share with us the photos of the lovely fellows you create. I would like to make one myself but the choice of the yarn discourages me. No need to hear or smell, your description took me to the wood with you and Toby!!!.

And here in the US we need all the beauty, good and light that we can get. Your posts are always the first ones I read…your bunnies, bears, mice and elephants touch my heart…and your willingness to share a slice of your life with all of us extends warmth and friendship across the world. Thank you so very much.

  18. So many lovely sights! What a pleasant mood you create for us with your camera. The knitted critters are, as always, delightfully desirable, I’m certain, to children, but,the child in this grandmother can hardly bear (: ^ ) not to gather up that whole drawer-full for herself.
Frustratingly, I’m on the move this month, changing homes. Wishing so much to be knitting asap this winter; when I finally get the household set up, at least one project will be one of yours.

  19. What a stunning place to walk. It must be so relaxing to have pretty places like that and so much to discover. I am sure that Toby must be happy to be back to walking again in the woods. Your little friends are so adorable in all their woolly goodness. I really must knit some more of your patterns that I have sitting in my pile.

  20. Lovely photos of the wood. Your little creatures are dear. Have you considered making sheep to add to your gallery of littles? Your photo of the pair made the wonder how you would render these lovely critters. I’m sure they would be sweet.

  22. Albie looks very smart. Woods are just gorgeous this time of year, if only the rain would just stop for long enough and left the sun shine through on those gorgeous leaves before they all go. Your photos help to bring the woods indoors. Thank you.
