In the bluebell woods

Hello again, hope you're well. Sorry that I've not been around much lately. The children have had a lot of time off school recently because of an odd arrangement of the Easter holidays and although they went back on Monday I've spent most of this week deep in pattern writing mode. It's going well but they're not quite ready so I'll post more about them when they're finished.

Spending a week mostly at the computer has left me feeling a bit cabin-feverish so earlier today I packed myself a little picnic and took myself off for a walk in the woods. It was the perfect antidote to staring at a screen and I thought you might like to accompany me. I had walked there 2 weeks ago when the bluebells were just breaking bud but today they were really at their best, I just wish I could have shared the wonderful scent with you because the whole wood was perfumed …

This little oak apple (oak gall) fascinates me. It's caused by a gall wasp laying an egg in the developing leaf bud and so changing how it develops. I'll be paying it a visit throughout the year to see how it grows. It's already changed a fair bit since I first saw it 2 weeks ago …

Well that's it from me for today. I got home just in time as it's raining heavily now so I'm going to go put my PJs on and snuggle with some knitting until dinner. Thanks for dropping by, I hope to be around here a little more once these patterns are finished and if you've emailed me recently and are still waiting for a reply I'm sorry, I hope to catch up with emails next week.

  1. Hi Julie, glad all well and you have managed to have a day away from the computer. We also went to see bluebells here today at Muncaster Castle near Ravenglass in Cumbria, fabulous display as well as stunning magnolias and rhododendrons. Weather beautiuful here today too. Looking forward to your new patterns ….

  2. Glad you got some “time out.” It is amazing how a walk can revive our spirit. You head to the woods, I head to the beach. Thanks for sharing the woody part of the world.

  3. Thank you for the walk in your woods, I have also been stuck at a computer for a couple of weeks and could really use a break. The weather here is wet and cold yet, but I will soon be able to go and will take a picnic like you did.

  4. Your woods are utterly charming and so peaceful to look at. Who wouldn’t want to spend a little time picnicking and taking pictures and enjoying nothing but the sounds of nature. I hope you enjoyed the experience even more than we enjoyed your sharing it with us!

  7. Gorgeous photos, especially the fourth one with the fresh green leaves overhead. A bluebell wood is truly glorious at this time of year isn’t it. Glad you managed to find a little time for a break, good luck with finishing the patterns and I hope you have a lovely weekend. CJ xx

  8. How I would have loved to come on that walk and picnic with you… Nothing like a broken ankle to induce cabin fever! Beautiful photos Julie.

  9. I walked in my local bluebell and beech wood on Wednesday, it was breathtaking. I sat on a log and just breathed in the scent and the colour and the birdsong. In one little patch there was cuckoo flower, bluebells and anemone nemerosa all flowering together – lovely. My grandma was a wonderful knitter of toys and your work reminds me of her.

  10. I think it is so lovely that you just upped and went out for a lovely picnic on your own! I am so used to being surrounded by little people that whenever I get alone time (Very rarely!) I simply never know what to do with myself. I’m going to remember this post for inspiration!

  11. Your Observers books really take me back to my childhood. If we attended Sunday School for a whole year we got to choose a book and I have ‘Birds’ ‘Wild Flowers’ ‘ Insects’ and ‘Butterflies’. I used to have great fun going for walks in the woods and fields. Your photographs are lovey; no wonder you get such relaxation from the beauty around you. Still, I am glad you are progressing with your patterns as, selfishly, I can’t wait to try them out. Best wishes!

  12. such stunning photos! That forest of bluebells reminds me of one that my now husband and I came across one time when we broke down on the side of the M4 many years ago, when we were dating. I can’t ever get over how beautiful it looks!

  15. Julie, I adore your photos, knitting patterns and wonderful descriptions of kids and life. It’s the second best to being there with you. I live in an especially beautiful area of the world (Sand Francisco Bay Area). However, I don’t know anywhere close to my home that has a Bluebell display like yours. So this was a special treat. My roses are spectacular right now, though. Here’s a link to some pictures that I took this morning. (You must be logged into the free Shutterfly Web site to view my pictures.):

It’s been raining here about once a week lately. The roses are loving it. Today is warm and sunny, so it will be an afternoon of yard work for us. BTW, I’m about to start knitting a Little Cotton Rabbit! Can’t wait…

  16. What beautiful photos. I haven’t done a bluebell wood walk yet but I do have some in my garden that are very pretty. Over the weekend I finished my LCR elephant and I can’t wait to share her on my blog. I loved every minute of the creation and can’t wait to start the boy cat!

The bluebells are just gorgeous! I’m glad you were able to get away and spend some time in nature renewing yourself. What a lovely picture that created in my mind!
We’ve done some hiking here as well. I’ve not been blogging or recording though. I’ve been so terrible at blogging for too long. Life is busy and I’m busy which is good. That means my health is better-ish.
Lots of loves and hugs to you!!
