woodsy

Happily the half term school break wasn't as wet and windy as I'd feared and in fact we were rather lucky with mild, sunshiney days perfect for lots of lovely wood walks.

Shadow

Toby is such a happy boy in the peace and tranquility of the woods, he notices lots around him, touching trees, exploring textures and enjoying the different sounds he can make with his feet depending on whether he's rustling through the leaves, tromping down the boardwalks or crunching along the gravelly paths. He does like to keep moving though (you can see his shadow pulling on my shadows arm in the picture above – "c'mon mummy, c'mon"). The only time he does agree to stop is when there is a snack involved. I might miss out on more in-depth looking at things and photo taking when I'm with Tobes, but I do love these peaceful little adventures that we share in the sanctuary of the woods.

Amy meantime had a great time on stage in 6 performances of the Addams family, though she was quite worn out by the end of the week. It was lovely to see her having such fun up on stage and the show was a great success.

Other than spending time with Toby and driving Amy back and forth I didn't get an awful lot done, so it's nice to have some free time again now he's back at school. I've been settling back into a bit of crochet blanket making.

Blanket

Fire

It has been put aside for most of the summer but it feels right to work on it again now the days are colder and shorter and I'd like to think that I might get it finished to put on the bed before winter truly arrives, though that might be a little optimistic of me. Once it's a bit more finished I'll find somewhere to spread it out and take a proper picture. I'm also working on a small batch of animals that I hope to have ready soon, more news of that when they're ready.

I'll be back soon with that post about the mice pattern making that I mentioned. Til then enjoy the rest of your week x

  1. Toby’s getting so Tall!!! It’s wonderful to see you two back in the woods enjoying your adventures there. What a lovely place to be in this great fall weather. Is that one blanket you’re making or two? As always your color combinations are dreamy. So so curious to see it spread out!! I’m happy for Amy that she was part of an acting troupe at school–it’s such fun!! Thanks for sharing your joy! Maire in NY

  3. I love Toby’s hoodie…..plenty of room inside for the ever present hat! My middle son is never, ever seen without a cap……ever!
I am joining you in picking up my long term blanket project, although it’s been going over a year now and there’s no end in sight. Xx

  4. Love hearing from you! That’s the weirdness of a blog…I do take it personally! Thanks for sharing your moments with Toby. I sometimes feel that slowing me down and taking notice was the message of having our Jack. Love Toby’s little wooden ladle…is that what it is. I am patiently waiting for my merino/angora to start my own little mouse. Hope you have gentle days doing what you love.
As always, Lori from Port Perry

  5. Beautiful woods and beautiful family. I look forward to making more mice and hearing about the pattern writing as you certainly are thorough with instructions. My Girl mouse turned out really cute and I am currently knitting the clothes for the Boy mouse. I wish we could get some of the beautiful yarns you use here in the USA. None the less, the mice are adorable and have been fun to knit. Thanks for sharing the pattern with all of us.

  6. Your forest forays are exactly what ours are. I find the kids are much better outside than in. They are happier. It translates into their behaviour and their thoughts (which they share liberally). And it is perfect weather for blanket making to be sure!

  7. Such beautiful woods Julie – I can completely see why Toby loves it there. So glad to see you’re having time for some crochet therapy – really looking forward to seeing more photos of the blanket as it grows.

  8. I’m always delighted to see a new post from you, Julie! I also feel moved to think of Toby being so touched by his woodland surroundings. Your son clearly has a wonderful soul and heart.
Yes, we have been so very fortunate weatherwise this autumn. The frost and mist hit us suddenly this week; quite a shock really as our autumn has been so mild and sunny. Thank goodness for yarny activities to keep our fingers warm by the fire! 🙂
And well done Amy for relishing being on stage!

  11. I enjoy seeing photos of you and Toby out on your walks. Makes me wish that there were some woods close by to adventure into and explore with Levi. We do have the trail that goes along the river for which I’m grateful for.
Good job Amy on your play! That would be exhausting! All of the hours of rehearsals and back and forth and then the performances. That takes a lot out of a person! And all of the driving…… yes. Mummy taxi service!
Normally I am ready for winter to come so I can tuck myself away into the couch for awhile but this year, I am not ready. I still want to be out and about on daily walks in perfect fall temperatures. None of this cold stuff that requires me to bundle up. Not ready at all for that! Oh well, doesn’t matter what I want. The cold is coming.
I’m glad you had your time with Toby and now that he is back in school you can settle in for some more knitting. I’m knitting a sweater right now. Trying anyway. The pattern. Argh! The pattern! Not written well and doesn’t match the photo of the sweater at all……… hoping I like this sweater when I’m done!!!

  14. Lovely to see Tall Toby enjoying the woods so much. There’s nothing quite like a walk there! We made our first visit to Forest of Dean about the time that you and Toby were out and about. Magic! Huge round of applause for Amy….and for Mum’s taxi service too. A little quiet blanket time will not come amiss now!
