The misty is still growing, one square at a time

Misty july

and I’m starting to think that it will look good draped over the sofabed that we bought last year to help us deal with having Toby awake so much at night. I’m glad that we have it because now H and I can take it in turns to get a decent sleep upstairs while the other is ‘sleeping’ here with Toby, but as a piece of furniture it sure is ugly!

Sofabed

Now I’m just trying to decide whether to have the throw draped over the back or to make it large enough to cover the whole flipping thing!

Sofa2

I shall keep one-a-daying until I decide.

Well, the school summer holidays are nearly upon us and I’m feeling both unprepared and unenthusiastic. The prospect of keeping Toby entertained for so long is an unsettling one, especially if we don’t get some dry weather soon. So I’m making like an ostrich with her head in the sand and spending the last few quiet days hiding away in a peaceful corner with my knitting.

I hope to pop in here as often as possible but I do expect to fall behind with my blog reading. So, here’s wishing you a good few weeks and hope to see you soon x

  1. The colours in your blanket are truly beautiful and it looks so lovely on your sofa!!
Perhaps it’s a good thing to be unprepared and unenthusiastic because then the reality may be much better than you anticipate, I really hope that is how it will be for you.
Wishing you sunshine and peaceful summer days Julie!
    Happy knitting,

  6. Looking wonderful. Just love the colours you have used. You are really inspiring me to make something similar as this is so different from my normal colour choice and i would never have dreamt of using such muted colours x

  7. Keep your head up! The next few weeks will be a lot of work but there will be moments that prove it is all worth it. I will keep my fingers crossed for sunshine. Your blanket is looking great already, I think you should go ‘all the way’ and make it big enough to cover the sofa :). Warm regards and a hug, R.

  9. I just tried to comment, but it looks like it didn’t go through. Basically, I just said that I love your blanket with the nice pastel colors in the center and the beautiful darker grey around the borders. It looks fabulous on the couch the way it is, but would look great bigger as well.

  10. You will be missed here in blog land. You and your family will be in my thoughts and prayers as you face the daily challenges of all a break in schedule brings. I do hope you will be able to steal some snippets of time however short to “needle” whether it be knitting or crocheting.
Take care and stop by when you can.

  11. Go the whole hog and make it to cover all the sofa! It looks beautiful and I am glad you left the brown squares in, they add little points of interest without standing out.
Hope the sun stays out for you – it’s rumoured to improve from next week. Let’s face it, it couldn’t get much worse! Have a great summer hols!

  12. Hi Julie,
I too am a mother of a son with Autism. I find alot of solace in knitting, sewing and crocheting I try and steel a couple of hours each evening and over the weekend. The blanket is lovely. You could of course consider it finished but when the mood takes you just add a few more squares a sort of work in continuous process until of course you completely run out of the wool you have made it with. Hope the summer hols don’t prove too hard going but I’ll be thinking of you.

  14. Hahaha! I understand the ugly furniture dilemma. Your one a day is beautiful and makes a nice cover up. I bet it is yummy to wrap up in too.
I wish I lived closer so I could help you and give you some respite while Toby is home. Darn ocean!!!! Oh that I could help……….. I’ll be thinking of you and hoping and praying! Many hugs and kisses from afar.

  15. Dear Julie,
Such beauty; I’m talking about the blanket not the sofabed 😉 What a serene palette of colours.
Keep your head in the sand, Julie. As Vivienne commented above reality is likely to be sweeter than anticipated. There will be plenty of pockets of joy for you all during the next “summer” weeks. After looking after a sick toddler for a week and a half whilst the rain dimmed our daylight day in day out I am overjoyed to have my two eldest lovelies back from their stay England. Sweet moments indeed even if it makes for more hectic times.

  16. Hi Julie,
I have been following you now since the beginning and truly understand your thinking. I don’t speak of this but find myself compelled to do so today.
As a mother of the first special needs twins in my area I have to say thank you. Thank you for sharing your life, your talents, those moments that make you want to scream and the saddness that fills our hearts. The tired sleepless nights that come with these children, the exhaustion ones body feels as we make it through another day.
Thank you for helping me to find the warmth of color. For inspiring me to knit and not just crochet. Thank you for being so talented and finding those snippets of moments to let us in to your life. I will keep popping in even just to know your here is soothing. Children like ours teach us a beautiul lesson in life. They touch our hearts were no one else could ever go. God Speed and Bless your family each and every day.

  17. Wow — it’s looking awesome Julie! I love the colors.
I thought of you the other day while watching an interesting show — they’re doing some amazing work with children who can’t speak and ipads. It made me get teary-eyed just thinking how amazing technology can be — it’s not just a timewaster on the internet! ;-D

  19. What a stunning blanket. Your eye for colour is so good, if I tried it the result would just be a mish-mash. Will keep my fingers crossed that the promised sunshine arrives next week to make life easier for you all. Hope you do enjoy the summer hols – you always seem to find the right path when many of us would be totally and truly overwhelmed. Sending a big hug.

  23. I hope that the Summer holiday goes OK. I know it is so difficult for Toby when his usual routine is disrupted. Lets hope the sun ahines, or at least, the rain stops, so that he can have lots of trampoline sessions. I’ve just had a new student in my class with Autism diagnosis, and his favourite thing is his trampolin. I thought of Toby when his Mum told me that.
I hope you manage a little ‘you’ time, and a little ‘you and Amy’ time during the school break. Hows the respite going?

  28. Fingers crossed for some sun for you Julie, so Toby can enjoy plenty of bouncing and bubbles in the garden.
The throw is gorgeous, and will look wonderful whatever size you make it, although the thought of it being big enough to cover the whole sofa bed is rather marvellous … at that size it would have a snuggle factor of 10+ for sure!
Wishing you an easy summer m’dear x

  29. The blanket is lovely! Just right for the back of the sofa. Putting a knitted/crocheted throw on the seat is problematic. Stretching and tearing. Just as it is is fine!

The misty is just stunning and makes me want to create one for my own home!! I love, love, love your color combinations. So beautiful! Praying for you and your family that the Holiday will hold many unexpected delights and blessings including great weather.

  31. Yummmmy! It’s looking fantastic! I would probably just drape it over the back or else it’d be falling off and stressing me out each time someone sits on it (can you tell I have this EXACT problem in my house?!) but maybe that’s just me being neurotic!
I can totally relate about the holidays. On the one hand I can’t wait to spend more time with my lad when he’s not exhausted and grumpy, but on the other hand I know that having both of the kids around ALL the time will make them crochety with one another. Thankfully we have a week in the sun to look forward to in August, because this rain is getting us all down and the kids are ill all the time at the moment.
    Here’s to sunny happy holidays!
    🙂

  32. This summer if you let it will whizz by, once Toby is in the summer routine.Mind over matter they say. Hopefully you have some special camps and activities to help pass the time. Perhaps you could find a teenager to be what we call in Canada a mother’s helper. Basically someone young with lots of energy to help entertain Toby an extra set of hands. But the best part will be that when you do have a quiet moment to knit it will be that much sweeter don’t you think. Please find a few minutes to share how things are going this summer I love to visit your blog weekly.
    Take care

Your blanket looks stunning. I have the same dilemma with my sofa bed downstairs … my tactic is to smother it in cushions!

  34. Oh, my word. You said “whole FLIPPING thing”! Now you’re sounding like Rachel and me. We, together, are corrupting your English, my dear. This makes you an official cit of Utah.
As for the sofa bed – crochet covereth a multitude of sins, I think. And that lovely thing you are doing could change ME into an angel. It’s so nice, Jules.
Just be brave and face the next while with love and courage. And don’t forget to breathe. What a thing children are, just in general – but having to walk across the abyss just to say hello makes it even harder. Write if you need anything I can give. We are here for you.

  35. Hi Julie – ‘wow’ – what a glorious blanket you have there….I can see your dilemma, the colours are gorgeous and I would be so tempted to have it on show all spread out across the sofa, but the snuggle factor ‘oh my’ – I hope you can find a good solution.
Hello…from over here…and what a beautiful blog you have.

  38. Hi Julie, how beautiful your blanket looks, for what its worth I love your blanket how it is, on the back of the couch leaving the seat plain. I just had to quickly tell you how much I love my little colombine bunny, she sits in my bedroom and you are one of the last people I think of every night when I see her. xxBrenda
