garden stuff

a spot of gardening

Typically for a British bank holiday we've spent the long weekend dodging rain showers. Luckily there have been some dry spells that were long enough for Toby to have some bouncy time and for me to potter around the garden. I had bought some new herbs to replace those that have been in situ for a few years and gone all woody and now they're happily bedded into my little herb wall.

In between the herbs I've planted a few little violas – they were on sale and are so pretty that it would have been unkind not to give them a home. There were a few too many to fit into the wall and as the herbs will probably crowd them out, I've popped them into a pot.

Since the weather isn't yet good enough for us to be spending much time outside I've brought them inside so that I can appreciate their delicate prettiness all the time.

It's nice to have a little taste of spring inside the house, though I hope that Toby isn't tempted to literally taste them – I've not had fresh flowers in the house since the peony munching incident!

  1. Aren’t violas just the prettiest little flowers, like little faces! 🙂
I love your pot, the violas look lovely with the moss!
I think violas are completely edible, if Toby feels the urge!!

  3. And those violas go so perfectly with your interior, such a pretty image! BHs are always a guaranteed disappointment unfortunately but at least there was some sunshine yesterday. 🙂

  4. I adore violas – I grow them outside for as much of the year as possible. Your prettily potted ones are just perfect. And as others have said they pose no danger to Toby, in fact you all might enjoy them sprinkled on salads ;D

  5. I rely on the large pansies to carry my containers through the winter. We call the small ones “Johnny Jump Ups” and they like to naturalize in my lawn with the violets.

  6. So sweet! I love violas and recall Jane Brocket posting an endearing photo of a couple of violas posing together like college girls arm in arm with beaming faces.
I planted some violas in the first week and march and we are amazed how well they have propagated. They are looking as fresh and breezy as two months ago but now they have doubled in quantity!
    Your pot is so delightful.

  7. And he could actually eat them. Some people put them, sugared, on deserts. Or are those pansies? Or are they the same?
“happily bedded” in a safe place. I want to come and live in your little herb garden. I think I’d love it there. You make your life so lovely. Fine, elegant and lovely. Part of your gift.

  8. Just in from our garden…hooray for the sun today!!!Love violas! Ours on the rockery have seeded, overwintered, and leapt up into three huge plants. I was never so suprised in all my life, as I’m not good at violas and pansies generally! Love your herb wall…we treated ouselves to a Herb Ladder with three deep boxes last year, and it gives us double pleasure..watching the herbs grow and eating the results!
    Love to you all Jx

  10. Your herb garden looks lovely Julie, I noticed that lovely lavender straight away, I have such a hard time growing it here and I do love it so. Your little peonies are so sweet too, like others have said….little happy faces, edible ones 🙂

  12. I would like to wish you a Wonderful Mothers Day weekend. I hope the weather will be nothing short of sunshine, sunshine, sunshine and warmth shining brightly down on you, your family and your terrific herb garden. You have made me look at things in life differently and to stop and actually see things without passing them by……..the world is a much better place with you in it, Julie Williams and those adorable Cotton Rabbits.

  13. What pretty violas! They look delightful in that lovely old pot. I need to look out for some decent terracotta pots to replace all the horrid plastic ones. Your herb wall looks great too. Lucy xx

  14. I planted up a little herb garden recently in an old wooden crate. I’m hoping mine will bulk out a bit!
I really love the little pot you’ve planted the viola in. It looks really pretty.

  15. Gorgeous! We’ve been so dry here! It’s May and everything looks like it feels like August… such an odd year weather wise. Last year we were flooding, this year drought.
I do have some veggies coming up in my veggie patch which has me excited and even more excited that school gets out next week so kids can help me weed! They’ll be thrilled………… 🙂
