bank holiday knitting

Well, as expected the bank holiday was a rather wet and windy one. There were a few sunny spells to tempt us outside but we were soon running back in again as yet another April shower swept over.

Still, it left plenty of time for knitting and I had a sudden urge to try out this wonderful free strawberry pattern.

Strawb2

It proved very addictive and soon I had quite a few. On some of them I kept going on the i-cord and added a leaf and flower at the other end to make bookmarks (not my idea – inspired by many of the creative adaptations over on ravelry).

I have a little bowl of knitted strawberries now sitting on the table and they're making me smile and think of the summer to come. I hope it arrives soon!

The flower pattern is here and the adaptations that I made, yarn used etc can be found on ravelry.

  7. are you my fairy godmother Julie? I made some some green baby bootees for a friends new baby and wanted to knit daisy flowers for the top but couldn’t find any patterns small enough. I had to resort to felt flowers which wasn’t ideal either but sort of turned out ok. These flowers were exactly what I had in mind but didn’t know how to make. I’m so grateful you shared your flower making secret :o)

Thanks a mill for sharing :o) Hope you had a lovely weekend x Mine was perfect as our local town hosted a Lamb Festival and I spent all day Sunday in a Wool Craft Village surrounded by knitting supplies, spinning wheels and knitters – it was fantastic:o)

  11. Hi Julie
These are fab! I’ve managed to find the flower and leaf over on Ravelry, but can’t seem to find the pattern for the cord part-do you have a link?

  12. Thank you for passing this on. I’m currently trying out your pattern for a fairy cake that I purchased. The first one looks ok but I need to find the poly filler you recommend – is there a supplier you could recommend? Also do you use ordinary cotton to sew on beads – I don’t know if button cotton that you suggest is something different – and do you use the colour of the bead or of the topping?
I often look at your blog but don’t leave a comment despite admiring all you do so much xx

  13. I had to do a second take, thinking they were real strawberries! Beautiful as always and thanks for the link to the pattern. I’m sometimes overwhelmed by how many patterns are listed on Ravelry and so pointers like this one are a gem. Pen xx

  14. Just adorable, I know what my next project will be! What yarn did you use and was the flower the pattern you have in your “freebies”?
You are such a talented and inspiring knitter.

  15. Hi Julie, could you let me know what size needles you used for these little cuties?
The pattern link says size 6 which I think is 4.5mm. Many thanks x

  16. Hi Jude. I use Pheonix polyester fibre
(used to be called monogram ultrafil) but I buy it direct from Oddies textiles
so dont know of a supplier of individual bags. The cotton I use to attach the
beads is extra strength button thread (usually a polyester thread) and I try to
match the colour of the icing. Hope this helps!

  17. Julie they are wonderful, I love them. I’m going to make some and add essential oils and put them in my wardrobes.
Oooh, my daughter is 3 in a few weeks – I might have to abandon my other project and make her some with extra long i-cords and use them instead of ribbon to tie her gifts in! I can’t wait!!!

  19. Hi Julie – what an inspired choice of yarn! When I “rediscovered” knitting about 2 years ago (when I first found your blog), the first thing I made was some strawberries from a free pattern on the web, (but they weren’t knitted in the round like these) – but I completely ruined them trying to embroider yellow seeds – these are perfect and the little unripe green one is pure genius!
I’d be so happy if only I had as much talent as you must have in your little finger!

  21. Julie,
I love the strawberries and am just starting to knit and crochet again. I made some lovely Crochet Rose bracelets and brooches for my friends for Mother’s day. I do so love the strawberries. I live in the USA but would be happy to buy some of them from you as they would be the most adorable book tags. Please let me know. You are so fast at this stuff and I am in awe of your talent. Please let me buy 2-3 from you. I have long ago realized that I will never be able to get a stuffed animal – as much as I love them…but perhaps a strawberry or three???? PLEASE! I can beg more! 🙂 Maybe I can trade you something that I make. go to http://www.girlwithcurlz.blogspot.com and let me know.
