A few posts ago I alluded to the negative and depressing side of blogging and having anything on the internet. I've had a really bad year for having my designs, images, writing etc copied and it's been festering in my mind so I thought I'd purge it by writing about it.
Basically it's stuff like this. This person* has cloned over 400 of my images from flickr, my blog and my redbubble page and posted them as their own on a picassa account. Not only that but they've made replicas of some of my knitted animals and are using my images as their printed tags, business cards and on listings on taobau (which seems a chinese version of Etsy). This is only the latest occurance of many and some days it truly makes you just want to jack it all in. I guess I continue because knitting is really what gets me through the day!
I know that I'm way too sensitive but it hurts a lot and I get so upset by this kind of thing. I started making the animals in 2004 as an antidote to some of the difficulties in raising a son with severe autism and I worked very hard to make my designs different to other knitted animal designs that were around at the time. I started the blog in 2006 and quickly discovered that as soon as you post images and people like what you're making then others will steal from you. I'm lucky that there are lots of people who look out for me and let me know when they see things that are copied. I'm lucky too that my work is distinctive and so copies stand out a mile.
In the UK the legal rights of designer/makers are protected by unregistered design right. In the UK you do not need to register a copyright for something that you create. This right is automatic and the instant you make something unique (ie not copied from something already in existence) it is protected by law. The organisation A.C.I.D (Anti Copying In Design) are an excellent source of information and they are strong in championing creative rights. But, regardless of the legalities I see it as more of a moral issue. How you can blatantly copy something you have no creative claim to is beyond me. If people had an ounce of creativity, imagination or integrity it wouldn't happen but in the 'want it now at any cost' culture we've arrived at, the honest, hard working people who just want to make something of their own are the ones that suffer both financially through lost business and emotionally.
*hopefully these links will be disappearing soon as Google's legal team are currently looking into the matter.
PS: It's not just my images and work that have been taken but Dilka's beautiful work has been copied too and another artist who created this image. I know I've seen it somewhere but have searched flickr in vain. if anyone recognises it and know the artist please let me know so I can contact them. Perhaps between us we'll be able to get Google to terminate the offender's account.
I’m sorry you have to deal with this. I think you are tremendously talented and generous. It stinks that people would steal from you in this way.

I don’t think you’re being too sensitive at all! You put a lot of time and effort into making these beautiful little people, and for someone to take credit for all your hard work is disgraceful – the brass neck of some people! I just hope the knowledge that so many more people enjoy your work and respect it than abuse it is enough to help you keep going through all this ❤ x

Holy cow, that thief is blatant and shameless! I completely understand your ire and hurt. I truly wish you can find recourse but I do believe she can and will hide behind double barriers of language and nationality…like the coward she is. I hope it is some consolation that her work is shoddy in comparison to yours and it fails to capture the essence of what makes your work so special. You say that anything posted to the internet is immediately copied, but I would say it is usually the best work that is stolen. Good luck, Julie. I’m rooting for you!

It probably isn’t any consolation but they really are a very poor copy and your animals really shine in comparison. It would be a shame if this led to your chosing not to share your lovely work and images as those of us who just want to look and admire and enjoy would feel sadly deprived.

You and I have had an email conversation or two about this in the past (as I’ve made a couple of bunnies inspired by your little cotton buddies for my DD and friends). I thoroughly enjoyed the toys I’ve made, but I would never dream of selling them. I can’t imagine the level of audacity it must take to think it’s okay to sell them as your own designs. Apart from being bloody angry about this…have you considered licensing out your designs to a company or autism charity? They are so popular, and sell so well. That way you get the full backing of a company behind you, you wouldn’t have to lose copyright to your work, but once things enter the commercial arena you (or rather, whoever you license to) have the legal and financial clout to really do something about this kind of theft. You have a really good story, through your blog, which could be used to your advantage; your work is too precious to be ripped off left right and centre.

I really don’t know what the answer is as you see it at different levels. There are those who copy work from books and sell on as their own designs (who are they infringing upon?) and then those who do it to the smaller designers. I know I have an idea (occasionally) and then see something similar out there. Then it feels impossible to follow that idea through for fear of being seen to have been influenced by or copied the other person. I guess that’s my morality and integrity showing through. Something which these blatant copiers lack.

Julie it is the saddest part of the web- blatant theft. We have even had our business web site template ( which we paid some serious dollars for) stolen/copied by someone who has developed a similar business and has copied our designs ( tweaked only slightly). The discerning consumer and loyal fan however can see instantly the serious deficits of the “pirate”. There is a way to “watermark” all your photos with not only your logo but copyright symbol and date. It has to be done to the photo before it is uploaded. You could also go to a password protected blog. Its too bad we have to think of protecting ourselves this way.
Keep your chin up, take whatever action you can and stay creative, and take joy in what you create, the “pirates” don’t have the mental acumen to keep up with you.
BTW have you heard about the movie Horse Boy?

I am also sorry for those of us who appreciate your work. I can only hope that this doesn’t completely discourage you from continuing your blog and sharing with us. I check your blog EVERY day. I am so excited when I see a new post. Knitting is my passion. I just love it. I spend lots of time looking for designers I enjoy and buying patterns and yarn on the internet. I have never and I mean never come across anyone who has work I enjoy as much as yours. Yeah for cupcakes and egg cozys! Maybe someday we will find a knitting book written by you…..
Just want you to know I love your work and would miss you greatly if there was no more Little Cotton Rabbits blog…..

unfortunately we live in this kind of world. I too have had my ideas stolen, and get very upset and stressed about it (it made me physically sick). I have figured if you have a great original idea and dont want anyone to copy it, dont put it on etsy (is that a too controversal statement???) – unfotunately it is true. PUT A LITTLE COTTON RABBITS text box across each image. I know this takes away the beautiful image of your gorgeous little characters, but it will help you and all your loyal customers will see past this and understand why it is there.

It’s hard when people copy your work and benefit from it, but unfortunately with the internet especially it is just a sad fact of life.
They always say imitation is the biggest form of flattery, but it doesn’t feel that way when you see examples of basically your hard work on other’s page.
Hang in there……….you created the originals and they are lovely!

Oh I see what you mean about blatantly copying Julie. I left a comment on one of her images but 2 other people had left one about saying it was illegal to steal, and then one after that was asking where she could buy her products from! Absurd and mean and horrible, I do hope those lawyers can get it sorted for you. Dont let her win either, perhaps you need to put your own label or a logo somewhere sneaky so it is like your own little trademark that only real customers will know of.

It’s the very distinctive Amber Alexander http://www.etsy.com/view_listing.php?listing_id=31622913
I’ms truggling a bit with this because I’ve started up and etsy store and often I’ll have an idea for something only to come accross something very similar. Nothing as distinctive as your work – for eg, I’m making tutus and if I see somthing someone esle has done, even if I’ve thought of it first, it doesn’t seem fair to do it once I know that they are. I feel like that’s cheating or stealing. I’m trying to find the line, because I want to be respectful of other people’s efforts. Imitation might be the sincerest form of flattery but stealing isn’t!
I’ve also found a couple of people who are taking posts from my blog, and reposting them on theirs. One appears to be an aggregate type blog, but the other ran my post through a translator, so it’s in very bad Chinglish. I’m not comfortable with it, as it’s got photos of me, and inside my house. But getting anythign done about it is such a hassle.
Perhaps consider a watermark for blog images? It’s hateful that you even have to think about that, but it might at least make these people think twice. I can’t believe it’s so blatant! Goodness me, I hope I never understand human nature.
Hugs and I hope you don’t let it get you down, because your creations are worthwhile and beautiful.

Oh Julie, How very sad. I would love a LCR original – I can’t knit for toffee, and it must be soul destroying to find your work, of which you plump full of time, love and care copied. It is a form of flattery – but a fairly naff one, and a hurtful one too. I echo what Gretel said about linking in with a Charity and selling your designs – or a ‘specially produced’ range through them, with obviously them benefiting also – but getting your name and ‘mark’ truly identified. Lets hope Google comes through for you. xx

I know it’s not much of a consolation, but Western notions of intellectual and creative proprerty rights doesn’t exist in the same way in Asia- images and stories have been copied, embellished and recycled for centuries.
Perhaps it’s time for you to seriously consider publishing your designs- better you profit from them than anyone else and ironically, it would offer them the best protection.

It is breathtaking how blatantly this person has copied you. Sadly, one of the downsides of the internet is the increase in this type of copyright theft. You might be interested in a blog called youthoughtwewouldntnotice.com which gives dozens of examples of this type of theft, including the incredible story of a young artist whose original drawings were not only copied by another “artist”, but the thief used her designs to create a portfolio of work which was submitted for a competition in which she won a prize.
It is tragic that talented people like you suffer at the hands of these unscrupulous individuals. In the end, the quality of your own work shines through, and the best part of any crafting activity is the personal satisfaction it brings you – they can’t take that away from you.
So many people admire your work and envy your talent – don’t let this nasty business get you down.

First of all, people don’t copy rubbish-it’s awful this but no one’s ever copied anything I’ve made!! The internet is a monster in many ways as legally controlling anything worldwide is VERY hard and VERY expensive. The bottom line is that YOU know the truth. We can’t control what other people do and all that energy spent worrying means you’re getting nasty anxious toxins flooding your body-they’re simply not worth it. Anyone who matters see those toys and thinks of you-everyone else matters not. When you think of yourself or others speak of you they know your achievements-you are so much better for knowing you achieved things yourself and not on the back of others. You need to do as you think but I say walk away. Protect your images on the internet-ie do all you can then get back to your life-you have so, so much-as you know. God bless.

Quite frankly what did you expect. If you put your work out there in the public domain sooner or later someone will copy it.
If as you say British Law is on your side then bring it into full force and come down hard on these people. I suspect that it its a case of you not wanting to do so due to funds, so instead of taking direct action you simply sit and moan.
While your work is nice, it isn’t so special as to not be copied and it is precious of you to think so. Stop whining like a baby and get on with your life, and tell people if it didn’t come from you it isn’t made by you.
For gods sake woman, my work is copied all the time, it’s the way of the world and YOU stuck it out there grow up you silly mare and stop throwing your toys out of your pram.
Failing that put your money where you mouth is, pay up and slam them in court.

I haven’t looked through the comments, and I don’t know if you already know, and I know what you’re saying about the principle of the matter, but i had a good tip this week which made me think of you and the Tesco incident … A lady who I know was given a tip by a patent lawyer once. What you do is put your designs in a sealed envelope, and post it to yourself, then never open it. What you need is the postmark. When something like this happens, you have proof positive -w ithout going to all the expense of patents and copyrights – that it is YOUR design and this proof is enough evidence to stand up in court and get a payout (if required!) … Thought I would pass it on and then saw this post too! It seems like you are a magnet for copyiers!!! I guess it’s a compliment but I do understand that it must be so frustrating for you. xxx

Hi Julie, sorry to hear about the drama.
I had the same thing happen to me, I had designed something and a friend (who is older and poor) copied it and started selling it. The one day I was visiting and someone came to collect one from her – and she tried to hide it from me. It was very awkward.
The best way to deal with stuff like this is to either mass market the things yourself (design for some toy companies/Tesco) or publish your ideas in a book.
If that is not your plan, you may be forever putting out these kinds of fires.
best wishes.

Julie, hi
Just read this posting, I’m really sorry that you’ve had this trouble. I really like your work and the blog and it’s such a shame that people cannot respect an individual’s creativity.
