About me & my knitting…

Hands

Hi and welcome to my blog, I’m Julie. I live in Hertfordshire with my husband, 2 children, 3 chickens and a lot of wool.

Here you’ll find I write mostly about knitting, which is my favourite way to spend my free time and it’s helped keep me sane through some of the more difficult times with our son who is severely autistic. Family life is a bit of a rollercoaster ride and I also write a little about our experiences in the hope of helping others in a similar situation and to give a little insight into some aspects of life with an autistic child. I also write about the countryside and wildlife that also inhabit this little corner of leafy green Hertfordshire.

There are some free knitting patterns for you to use (see the ‘free patterns’ button on the right). I also have patterns available to purchase, it’s a small range of toys and novelties at the moment but I hope to keep adding new ones. I’ll keep the blog here and my ravelry page up to date with any new releases.

Me with wool

A little bit about me:

I trained as a graphic designer and since graduating I’ve worked as an illustrator, in sales & marketing and more recently as full-time mum and part time knitter. I was nine when my Mum and Gangan taught me to knit and knitting has been a part of my life in some shape or form ever since. I knit to keep stress at bay, to have a creative outlet in my life but mostly because it simply makes me happy.

Since 2005 I’ve supplied my knitted work to various outlets: Hope & May, Gibbs & Ward, London Mummy, The Cross in Holland Park, Lilymay in Brighton & Mahar Drygoods in the USA. I currently sell what I make through my Etsy shop and although I’m unable to take on orders I am always making new items and will keep my mailing list up to date with anything newly available. To be added to this list please use the sign up form in the column on the right there.

I like a quiet life and the other things that bring me pleasure are:

  • listening to music – Ludovico Einaudi on a sunny Sunday morning, The Wailin Jennys in the quiet of the evening when the children are in bed, Nick Drake when it’s raining or I’m down and ’80’s disco when I feel full of life and want to dance with the children.
  • cooking and eating, especially homemade cake, cold rhubarb crumble with custard, goat cheese with tomatoes and I like drinking tea from a nice cup.
  • being outdoors, especially the smells of mushroomy earth, cut grass and thyme and the sounds of birdsong and the wind in the trees.
  • growing things in my little garden, especially things to eat; herbs, vegetables and raspberries warmed by the sun.
  • hills and woods, camping and the sound of rain on your tent when you’re warm & dry inside.
  • buying yarn, knitting, singing when I’m happy, reading other people’s blogs, warm socks and cosy cardis

and I love being a mum.

  1. Hello.
I really like your site so I thought I would comment. I myself have recently taken up knitting again. My only problem is not being able to find good quality wools! Being disabled I can’t really travel very far very often and mail order just seems a tad impersonal. I’d love to know you’re favourite wool shops and or sites. Though I’m not too sure where you are from.
    Happy Knitting!

But my question is do you sell the pattern of toys.?
I would love to buy a copy, and use it in my knittingclub. Maybe I can get them to knit to babies in hospital? Hope you will have time to answer. Sincerely Ingrid in Norway

The animals you have knitted are a delight, do you sell the patern?as I would love to have a go at knitting them. I have started knitting again few months ago after a break of a few years. I have started knitting toys for my work raffle and to give to my childrens school for their raffles, that’s when I’ve finished them! I found your site via a knitting magazine with the cute easter eggs pattern.

  11. How delightful to see your hard work. I have started knitting again after a lapse of 3o years or so. My daughter (37) is expecting twins and its been a rough time for her and her husband. To keep my mind off the worries I am knitting toys and animals from old and new pattens. I had forgotton the joy of completing an item and proudly showing her.I pray my work will soon be on display in a lovingly decorated nursery.

  14. Hello and Happy Easter
I was actually looking for a patchwork web site and found you, I was seduced by the Little Cotton Rabbits. This is the first time that I have ever responded to a blog. Your site is lovely, I get the feeling that I will visit often. I haven’t knitted anything in ages but I can’t wait to have a go at your Christmas stockings ( yes I know it’s far too early ). I have never knitted any kind of toy but your lovely ones give me itchy fingers, I would now love to have a go. My Nana taught me how to knit when I was 4 years old, I have a very clear memory of it. I have very recently retired at 60 so I just might pick up my needles again.
    Kindest Regards, I’ll be back

I am from Adelaide in Australia. I have 3 children who are all on the autism spectrum. I think it is fab you are doing something so positive under difficult circumstances. I find it inspirational. My children’s autism has changed my life for the better. They have taught me so much – I am so grateful to them for that. They are the apple of my eye. I think your site is fabulous. I will forward the web address to a support group I am part of. I think some of them would also like your site as it may bring some sunshine to their day. My name Simona and are Italian,I’ve 2 children and I take care myself to produce and to sell sweaters in 100%cashmere for children. I have seen your wonderful web site and I would be interested to acquire the little cotton rabbit, in particulare I like very much Angeline and the cupcakes.
I not being in a position to working to mesh I would want to buy it already done. How can I make? Or, where I can buy your products?
Thanks for Your answer and I make excuses myself for the English bad one.

  21. Thank you for your answer.
I like very much Angeline but i can choose the other in the stock because they are all beautiful.
Instead i prefer the pastel(I love violetpink and white), flower (for example the last photo cakes in your web site) and the chocolate cupcakes.
I need 20 cupcakes but I desire to spent 6 euro for each. Is it possible to make this price? because I will buy more objects.
Is it possible to pay with credit card?
The last question: how much is the Angeline rabbit and the others tall?
Can I have them tall around 7/10 cms?
I forgot. I would be pleased to belong to his/her mailin list and to know in advance the new characters that it will create.
    thanks for this possibility
    Thankyou for your cooperation.

I have a neighbor with an autistic child and it’s overwhelming to say the least. It has affected us all on the street…the stories are heartbreaking…driving down the street and finding that her daughter is riding on the roof of the car…multiple times. She has written a beautiful book of poetry about her journey with autisim and does public speaking. She and her husband are a great support resource for families and have been for many years. I hope this is an encouragement to you. http://www.livingthemosaic.com/index.htm

  48. Dear Julie, I just wanted to thank you again for the wonderful cupcake pattern. I did make a few changes but isn’t a pattern meant to be a roadmap after all? I knitted the bulk of the cupcake with double pointed needles because most of my seams look really terrible. I also added a few rows to the icing since all I had for that was baby yarn, and now the icing perches on top of the cupcake like the real thing — nifty. Finally, I added a small handful of clear pony beads under the stuffing to act as ballast, and they flattened the bottom quite nicely. You have made my day!

  76. Julie, I am new to your blog and I love your work! You are so talented! My heart goes out to you concerning your son. I know that God can heal him. I know it may seem impossible but all things are possible with God! Nothing is too hard for Him. When Jesus died on the cross, the stripes on His back were for our healing. I hope this doesn’t offend you, I know that many Christians have been mean and have “turned people off”. But I know that He loves us and wants the best for us even more so than an Earthly father wants the best for his children. Get a bible and read it; read all the scriptures on healing and claim them over your son! Having faith and claiming Gods’s promises are powerful! I will be praying for your son! nitabug

I am compelled to reply to the nasty comment left for you recently. You are right in saying it reflects badly on the extremely judgemental person who left it and have responded gracefully and wisely.
Unfortunately, there are those who seem to think its okay to dish out bile to anyone who, in their eyes, appears better off then themselves. Its another form of “poor me – if you had my life etc.etc”. Keep knitting my dear – best wishes to you and your family. ps. love your stuff

  87. Dear Jill:
I am really moved with everything I’ve read in your blog about you and Toby.
My name is Maureen. I´m chilean. I’m a 43 years old, mother of three boys (15, 13 and 10). My second son is authistic. When I saw Toby’s picture, he reminded me very much of my “Tatán” (his name is Sebastian, but we call him Tatán).
I’m a lawyer, but what I really enjoy and need, both for mind and heart sanity, is crafting, crocheting, knitting and beading.
Thank you for your daily effort, for the lack of sleeping, for enjoying the simple and little, but also huge advances Toby makes!!!
I will be visiting you as often as I can!
Best wishes for someone so special, who can create such beautiful things and with such a beautiful child to love!

  93. Hi Julie,
We’ve recently launched a knitting competition we thought might interest you.
It’s an attempt to revive the tradition of families on Guernsey having their own unique knitting pattern for the guernsey jumper.
So we’ve teamed up with knitting community I Knit London to ask knitters and designers to design their own guernsey jumper!
The first prize is a holiday for two to Guernsey, with £50 yarn vouchers for the runners’ up. And I thought this project might well be of interest to you after seeing your fantastic blog.
You can find out about the competition on our blog: http://blog.visitguernsey.com/blog/i-knit-guernsey-the-knitting-competition-to-revive-the-guernsey-family-patterns/
And what makes a guernsey a guernsey here: http://blog.visitguernsey.com/blog/a-knitted-history-the-understated-and-practical-traditional-guernsey-jumper/
Or the competition page entry form here: http://www.facebook.com/VisitGuernsey?sk=app_190322544333196

Are you willing to sell the patterns? I would think that by selling the patterns, you could generate all kinds of income. Again, they’re so sweet – and have characters of their own.

Do you think that you could give me some advice on where to start. I am quite a novice at computers. Okay with word.
At the moment I am only looking at displaying photos, as I dont think my patterns are professional enough and I dont know yet how to get them vetted if thatsthe word. I also only knit in double knit.

I found your blog yesterday and just couldn’t stop reading, so I went back all those years , watching your story unfold.
Thank you, not only for sharing your life and the lovely things you create but also for sharing the much more personal story of your family and your struggles to find the right path for all of you.
I wanted to let you know that I feel great joy ( of the toe curling sort) when I look at your posts….your sense of colour is extraordinary and speaks to me in every single, thoughtful photograph. I look at them and go ” Eeeeeek” inside. And want to run off to buy huge amounts of wool….( I must make one of the crochet blankets…..).
Please keep going, your posts will brighten my days and I feel happy just looking at the pictures…they tell stories and that is a wonderful gift….

  106. I just found you on Pintrest this week and I love your designs! You have inspired me to try to get back to my knitting. I love knitting, gardening and have a very playful sense of humor and you seem to have those same qualities. It is what helps me get through my hectic life. Your son with autism is very lucky to have a Mum that can see things through his eyes more than your own. I find that it helps when working with young people with these obstacles to deal with. I have friends who have a set of autistic twins that also have life threatening allergies. You will always be in my prayers as you and my friends always are exhausted. Thanks for your inspiration!

  121. Please, may I ask you a question? How do you keep so much joy, order, light, and hope in your life? I find life a constant desperate battle to survive as a Family with two Autistic Children and a Husband who we all believe is high functioning Autistic! I am far too run down to achieve half of what you do! Really I’m just longing to stop the constant cycle of medical appointments (my 7 year old Daughter has already had 15 operations and medical procedures, and multiple other hospital stays, due to her Spinabifida and other medical conditions as well as Autism – which she has just been diagnosed with) and breathe in deeply the beauty of nature and enjoy my precious Family! How do you manage it, please?
