I visited my Mum on Sunday. She’s adapting well to a very different existence and remains pretty positive considering the situation. She even managed to joke with the surgeon who fitted the halo brace and it’s good to see her fighting and winning against the panic that any of us would feel in the same position. She’s slowly being elevated and tried sitting up yesterday for the first time but fainted fairly quickly – this is something to do with changed blood pressure as she’s being lying flat for nearly a week. She’ll be trying again though and now that she’s been told that she can come home once she’s up and about I know that there will be no stopping her!
On the journey home from my visit I was listening to a new CD Hand Built by Robots by Newton Faulkner and one track had some very apt words to sum up what the last week must have been like for my mum…
"Don’t take my photograph. I don’t want to know how it looks to feel like this. As cars and people pass it feels like standing still but I know, I’m just moving uncomfortably slow…"
Well Mum, the pace is quickening so hold on to your hat!!

I can’t believe how great her spirits are given the circumstances.
I am half her age and there is NO WAY I would be able to handle things as well as your Mum!
Oh how I miss driving in a car listening to music…a very nice diversion from life sometimes. I haven’t driven a car since I lived back home (New York) 5 years ago!

Poor mum! It’s going to be really difficult for her when she does get home as well – a friend of a friend slipped of the banister and down the stairs and did the same thing some months back (trying to change a light bulb in his socks no less – tsk!). He found it really difficult mainly because he couldn’t be as ‘busy’ as he usually was. Best wishes to your mum.

Your mum sounds like a remarkable woman. I don’t think I could be that positive in her situation. My thoughts are with you and your family. PS – just seen the rose you knitted on Flickr and it’s truly beautiful 🙂

It’s wonderful to hear such positive news. Your mum sounds very brave indeed – it must be quite terrifying to feel so helpless. But, in time I’m sure she’ll be back up and at ’em again!
Hugs to all of you.

Hello there,
I have been reading your block for a while now with great admiration on your look upon life and beautiful work.
And now I feel an urge to say something to you, eventhough I don’t know you!
I have tried to be the same place in life as you are right now with your mom.5 years ago my mom had a very bad stroke and needed to stay in hospital for 8 months. (I don’t hope that your mom will have to stay there for so long!) However, I recognize the feeling so well, which you describe in the song. But things WILL go forward and moms are SO tough. I wish you both the very best…
Kind regards,
Ulla

I am so pleased to hear the good progress she is making even if it does feel uncomfortably slow at times. There’s a lot to be said for being slow and steady – just ask the tortoise.

From here on, it will just be a series of improvements and steps forward, so as long as she keeps her positive outlook and bright spirits, she’s got the worst behind her. Take care of yourself, and her! Wishing for the quickest possible road to normalcy for you all.

I am so glad to hear that your mum is doing better. I am sure it wont take too long for her body to adjust to being in the upright position. I am sure it is harder for people to see her in hospital than it is for herself too.
